It only has to be connected during the setup process or has to be always connected? What I want need to know if Can I connect the nest router to an existing wifi network and extend that network or create a new one. Like a wifi extender.

Google/ Nest Wifi can only wirelessly extend Google/ Nest Wifi networks. There needs to be a master/ main puck, and it needs to be wired. But remember that this master puck also is a router, with NAT and firewall. It's not just a wireless access point, and it's not a generic Wi-Fi repeater either.

I don't work for Google.
