Ethernet backhaul issue

ErikLeonsson
Community Member

I have a Google Wifi Router installed in my basement next to my modem. My ISP account speed is 500 mbit. In my basement I have perfect wifi speed at around 500 mbit. On the upper floor (Hallway) I have another Google Wifi Point installed. I backhauled it with a Ethernet cable from the Google Wifi Router (tried both with a high capacity switch and wired directly to the router).

And here's the problem, on the upper floor I repeatedly get 1/10th of the wifi speed, 40-50 mbit.

1. The cable. When connecting a laptop directly to the Ethernet cable it gives me 500 mbit, so the cable is fully functioning. It's also correctly connected downstream Modem > Google Wifi Router (WAN port) > Google Wifi Point (Tried both WAN and LAN ports).

2. The devices. I've tried with multiple devices to measure the speed with the same results, both laptop, iPhone and Android devices.

3. Troubleshooting. Contacted Google and after a 45 min call we didn't get any closer to a solution. I have tried to  switch places on the Google Wifi routers. I have tried to use a Google Nest Router in the Basement instead. I need to backhaul the Wifi point since the house have concrete ceilings which seriously lowers the Mesh network signal.

Are you using a switch in between? What make and model?

Does the Google Home app say that the 2nd unit is connected to the 1st unit by wire? Go to the 2nd unit in the Google Home app, then settings to check what it says.

I don't work for Google.

I've tried both with a high capacity switch and wire it directly to the router so I think I can rule out the switch as the problem here.

The 2nd unit says it's connected "to the power grid" (translated from Swedish).

But for the record, the switch is a Ubiquiti UniFi USW Lite 16 PoE 45W.

Seems it has loop detection, STP (spanning tree protocol)? Try to disable it, as it is known to cause trouble with Nest Wifi.

Also disable any BPDU forwarding guard / prevention / protection if present.

More info on use of managed switches with Nest Wifi:

If that does not help, try without the switch, or with a different unmanaged switch, like a Netgear GS108.

I don't work for Google.
