I have had Google WiFI Mesh for years now and until a few months ago, I started having this issue where.
Whenever anyone with a mobile device (iphone, android device etc) connects to the Google wifi network, none of the Google apps - maps, YouTube, sheets etc work. They all work when I use WiFi network through the router (non-Google ) as well as mobile data. Also it works fine when using a laptop, but never on the mobile device. Which is ironic that I cannot use any Google apps on Googles own mesh wifi network and also very very frustrating!
I tried changing the DNS server on the Google home app to point to the Google servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but that didn’t solve the problem.
Any insight or pointers to help with this? I tried resetting the Google wifi network but the same problem persists.
As of today I am noticing that the speed also has degraded to 20Mbps (on my routers network it is 200Mbps). I need help before I decide to toss this equipment out!

Hi @sid1986,
Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your Google Wifi network, where Google apps are not working on your mobile devices, and you've seen a noticeable degradation in your network speed. I appreciate you detailing the steps you've already taken, including changing DNS settings and resetting the network, and specifically noting that the problem is isolated to mobile devices when connected to your Google Wifi, while working fine on other networks and on your laptops. Let's work together to find a solution.
Since you've already tried changing DNS and resetting your Google Wifi network, let's explore some other potential causes for this behavior:
1. Network Setup Clarification (Important for Double NAT): Your Google Wifi system is designed to be your primary router for optimal performance.
Could you please tell me how your Google Wifi's main unit is connected to your internet service? Is it connected directly to a modem, or is it connected to another router (your "non-Google" router, as you mentioned, works fine)?
If it's connected to another router, connect your main Google Wifi router directly to your modem (the device that brings internet into your home).
Disable the Wi-Fi functionality on your existing non-Google router. This prevents two Wi-Fi networks from running simultaneously and potentially causing interference. (The process for disabling Wi-Fi on your main router will depend on its specific brand and model, but it's often an option in its settings, sometimes called "bridge mode" if it's a modem/router combo).
2. Specific Mobile Device Network Settings:
On one of your problematic mobile devices, please try to "forget" your Google Wifi network, then restart the device, and finally reconnect to the network. This can sometimes clear any cached network settings that might be interfering.
On your mobile devices, check your private DNS settings. Ensure it's set to "Off" or "Automatic" rather than a custom setting, as this can override your Google Wifi's DNS configurations.
Try temporarily disabling "Wi-Fi Assist" (on iPhones) or "Smart Network Switch" (on Android devices). These features can sometimes cause intermittent connectivity by attempting to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data when the Wi-Fi signal is perceived as unstable, which could confuse Google apps.
Please try these steps carefully, and let me know the results. Your feedback will help us figure out the next best steps to get your Google Wifi connected and working efficiently for all your devices.
Regards,
Kevin
