Goggle Nest Wifi on power outage or restart of Network the devices connect to the Router not point

Good Day, I will try this method as the chat is worthless.

I have the following current setup. Google Nest Wifi Router AC1200 (just replaced with new AC2200 today) with 3 points AC1200. My home was built in 2005 and is 2500 sq FT so the system is more than enough to cover it and I have no Lead paint on my sheetrock walls. I have 4 Google Nest Outdoor Camera's, Nest Hello, Nest Thermostat, several Nest Protects, and two Nest Mini Speakers as my primary devices.

I had been seeing constant dropouts of my devices demanding to connect to the Router instead of the points even when the point is right next to the device. I tried Factory Reseting everything Router, points and this did not help. I removed all devices from my Google Home App, and deleted my Nest App. I basically started over from scratch. Still whenever a power outage, or Restart of Network happens all of these devices connect to the Router instead of the point right next to it. This causes low signals on my devices and they drop off the wifi as it is not a good signal. These are Google Nest devices connecting to Google Nest Wifi Devices so can't blame the suppliers of the devices. Oh wait I can here!

I ordered a new Router Google Nest Wifi AC2200 from Amazon this week and repeated (started over from scratch) the above. The devices connected to the points no issue. However, a power outage or a Restart of Network on the Router I get the same results and it is very repeatable. In order to get the device to connect to the points, I need to unplug the device at the power brick (USB connection). Now please don't tell me my router, points is bad or my devices. Nor don't tell me I need to unplug all of my devices to get this to work correctly as I know it will until the next power outage or Network Restart. This is also a huge safety concern for my home as I have the Nest Protect and Security Camera's on this system and if they don't work as intended whats the point of having it at all. I feel what is happening is the Router comes on first before the point and the devices do as well and the points come later. The issue is these devices don't do a lookup or scan after the initial connection to switch to a closer point to get a better signal.

I spent well over $2000 on this setup and I am not very happy with its performance. I am looking for a solution not a run around doing things for support to end the chat. I am not looking to go unplug each device every power outage or Network restart. This is not the reason I purchased Google products.

Hey @Ken15 .

The "issue" you are describing is not an indication of any device issue(s) but the intended behavior of the connecting devices themselves. Whenever a device tries to connect, it will search for the strongest Wifi signal available that meets its requirements; this is not determined by the router. The router only manages the traffic and allows/disallows devices to use it.

What is happening when you have a power outage is that the Nest Wifi devices are rebooting at a different rate when the power comes back on. The devices trying to reconnect are scanning for known networks to connect to and when it is found makes said connection. If you have a device that is closer to a point but the main router fully reboots first, it will connect to it. Once the device is turned off and back on, it resets the connections and then reconnects to the closest point because that signal is now the strongest.

Here are ways to try to resolve this:

  • Use a battery backup on your network equipment so that it is not affected by power outages. This can be expensive depending on your needs but is the best option.
  • Power cycle the Nest Wifi devices in reverse. Start by unplugging the power from all Nest Wifi devices. Plug them back in starting with the third one first, then the second, and lastly the main. Once you see a device has started the reboot, move to the next one an don't wait until it finishes. In theory, this should resolve your issue but it could still cause a few devices to connect to a further point until the device restarts.
  • Disable Wifi on the affected device and re-enable it. This may work or not depending on factors outside our scope of support in the Community.

I hope this helps but be assured there is nothing wrong with either your Nest Wifi or connecting devices. <et me know if this resolves it or you need further assistance.
