Google Home reporting a car charger device as "wired"

I couldn't connect to my car charger via wifi.

I looked at the car charger device using Google Home.  Rather surprisingly Google Home was reporting that the car charger was a wired device!  (it's not)

I asked Google Home to test the speeds of all devices on the network.

This seemed to sort the problem:  the car charger was correctly reported as a wireless device with 76Mbps speed.

More importantly my car charger could be connected to via wifi and I could start charging.

Why would Google Home think that a wireless device was a wired device?  Any advice to prevent this happening again - it was lucky that I spotted that the charger wasn't available as it would have failed to charge my car overnight (the charge wasn't due to start immediately).

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hiya MarkTewk,

Thanks for reaching out to our community!

There are a couple of reasons why Google Home might have initially identified it as a wired device. These reasons include limited router visibility (the router may not be able to differentiate between wired and wireless devices) or even a temporary glitch in the Google Home app.

While there's no guaranteed way to prevent this entirely, here are some tips that might help:

  • Restart your router and Google Home.
  • Ensure your car charger is connected to the main Wi-Fi network for better device communication.

By doing so, you can hopefully minimize the chances of Google Home misidentifying your car charger in the future.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Angel.

Before I got your response I decided to reboot the charger and this caused a power outage to the router.  The problem resolved but I'm not sure whether the problem was with the charger or the router - although I suspect the router.  If this happens again I will reboot the router first.

Thanks for the advice.
