Google Mesh throttling speed

Pjd3
Community Member

I am paying for 1G internet connectivity but only averaging 500mbps.

i had Xfinity come out and they measured bandwidth at the network side and LAN side of the cable modem and determined they are delivery 1G down. And the modem is passing 1G to the router.

The tech told me that he’s been on several calls for the exact same issue and the majority of the time it’sa google nest router doing the throttling. His experience was that the last firmware update from google is causing the issue

When can we expect this to be fixed?

You will almost never get LAN speeds over wifi, there are too many variables; building construction, interference from other networks, the end device's wifi card and firmware/drivers. I'm not making excuses for Google, but temper your expectations from Wifi.

Hi @Pjd3

@kiltguy2112 is correct. WiFi is never going to perform the same as an ethernet cable.
The only way to determine if your Nest Wifi setup is getting the speed is by testing it on the device itself or connecting a client with an ethernet cable.

Even with the new Nest Wifi Pro I am getting about 600 with WiFi 6E. 🙂
Then again... not sure if I need this speed yet currently.

I wasn't clear. The speed at the LAN side of the cable modem is 1G.  The cable modem is connected to the router via a CAT6 100G cable.  I am only seeing .5G on the modem side of the router - there isn't any Wifi involved. i also have a FING device CAT6 connected 1 hop from the router.  Testing the internet speed from the router via the home app and from the fing device (via desktop wired to same w=switch as router and fing I get a consistent .5G.

As I said in my original post the Xfin tech measured speed at the LAN side of the modem at 1G so I know I'm getting a gig at the gateway. He also measured the speed on the LAN side of the router and there was a drop of .5G across the router (ie. modem -> 1G -> cable -> Router -> .5G.

One other factoid. Prior to early November I was getting .8/.9G measured at the router.

Despite the miserable management console on the G Mesh I don't want to go through the pain of replacing if I don't have to

Clarification . I'm seeing .5 G on modem side of router when I measure it from the router, the xfinity tech replaced the router with his device and saw 1G . when he put the router back in the circuit and measured the wired BW coming out of the router he was only seeing .5G

In other words, the output Ethernet port was giving you half the bandwidth of the input Ethernet port? That’s messed up. I don’t use my output port, so I don’t know if I have that going on or not.

Hey folks,

@Pjd3 and @Mapprehension, I’m sorry to hear you’re both having this issue. Let's see what's going on.

Quick question: do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues. (You may skip this step if you’re using a cable modem.)

Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.

Remove any special characters in your network name and password.

Turn off IPv6.

Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.

Unplug the power from your Nest Wifi devices for 2 minutes.

If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help, @kiltguy2112 and @RXShorty.

Best,
Abi

Thanks, Abi. I don’t use Nest as my firewall router; I have an enterprise firewall router that the Nest is behind. The Nest sees that router as the WAN connection. Hence, I won’t be putting the firewall router into bridge mode. I would prefer to have the Nest in bridge mode, actually, but as far as I understand, doing that means I can’t use the mesh capability. There is no interference; I can sit right next to the router and still only be getting ~500 Mb/s on a device that will receive at more than double that when using another modern WiFi router. I don’t use IPv6, and network name and password are all ASCII. The DNS server settings are as you suggest. I use WPA3, by the way.

Hi

The DNS settings change seems to have done the trick

Hi everyone,

@Mapprehension, have you tried doing a factory data reset? Take note that this will clear out all network data but it's an essential part of troubleshooting your issue.
@Pjd3, I'm happy to hear it's all working now. Let us know if you have any other questions or clarifications.

Regards,
Abi

I don’t understand why I would do a factory reset. The performance has not changed since I bought and set it up recently from a factory-fresh state. Doing the same thing twice doesn’t seem like it would change the outcome. The app is buggy, so starting over is frustrating.

Hey Mapprehension,

I understand the hesitancy of going through a factory reset, but it does often prove to be the fix for similar issues like this. It will prompt a fresh download of the newest firmware version available and clear out any possible old settings that might be causing some conflict. If you give that a try and it doesn't work, it does allow us to rule out a few options and move to more specific troubleshooting steps.

Thanks,
Jeff

I did a factory reset. No joy. I’m limited to 600 Mbs on Nest when a wired connection yields close to the 1 Gb rated speed.

Hi Mapprehension,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having an issue with your Google Nest Wifi. We'd like to take a deeper look into this — could you fill out this form and let us know once you're done?

Cheers,
Abi

I’ve submitted the form.

More information: When connecting by Ethernet to the master Nest router, I get close to my rated internet connection speed. It’s the WiFi side of it that isn’t delivering. If I go to a mesh node and connect to it by Ethernet, I get the same half speed as when I connect by WiFi. This suggests that communication between the mesh nodes is also slow: It’s the same speed as the slow WiFi that’s getting delivered. Shutting down the mesh nodes does not improve the WiFi speed from the master router.

I have the same problem. No, you’re not going to get rated speeds, but the Nest is much slower than many other offerings from Asus or Netgear despite claiming the same WiFi standards.
