Google OnHub adding additional OnHub Point - Flashing Amber can't connect

criker
Community Member

I have an existing mesh network of two OnHub - one obviously designated main, and one secondary.  I am finally ready to add the third OnHub as an additional point.  I opened the box and plug it in and it flashes blue for a short period of time and then goes to flashing amber.

I have previously migrated to Home (vs wifi) and when I go thru the set up it finds the device, goes all the way thru and has me add the code, then gives me the regular admin type messages, but then isn't connecting it to the network and adding it.

I have tried unplugging and restarting; I have tried factory reset (which is odd since it was brand new in box).

What's going on?

Hi criker,

Thanks for posting ― let's get this sorted out.

Could you try to connect the main Google OnHub and this additional point using an Ethernet cable so they are hardwired during the setup process? You can remove the Ethernet cable after the setup is complete.

Let us know how it goes.

Mel

Yes ... I tried that as well ... it gets thru the process, seems that it has completed the process and then goes back to the home screen and the new unit is not there.

Hi criker,

To help us get a better picture of what's happening, do you mind sharing a photo?

Best,

Mel

I don't understand what you would want a photo of?  Let me explain more clearly:
I have an existing wifi mesh with the One Hub - using one unit as a router and a second unit in another part of the house as a point (both OneHub) these have been working well for several years.  I have been trying to add an additional unit as another point.  I am using the Home (since the wifi app is no longer valid).  the two units are shown on the Home as active units.  I go thru the set up process
+, set up device, new device, existing Home, looks for device - (first time I did this the device was flashing blue for set up got all the way thru and then switched to red after changing to local network - now the device flashes blue when first turned on, but changes to amber after maybe 5 seconds); even though flashing amber, it finds the device, asks me for setup code, enter set up code, goes thru the process to add to mesh, screen goes back to home as if it is completed, but the device is not showing up.

Hi criker,

Thanks for clarifying. Are you still seeing your offline network on your Google Home app? If so, you need to remove it first before you can setup your Google OnHub again.

Best,

Mel

The original two are still working without a problem ... It is just the add on point that isn't showing up

Hi criker,

Thanks for the added detail. To confirm, you have two Google OnHub and another device. Is that other device a Google OnHub, Google Wifi point, or Google Nest Wifi point?

Best,

Mel

The two original points are OnHub and the additional units I am trying to add are also OnHub

Hi criker,

Could you unplug your Google OnHub for 2 minutes, then retry to add it back to your network?

Best,

Mel

Hi folks,

@Jhonleanmel, thanks for the help.

@criker, I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Regards,

Dan

Yes I am still needing help - yes I did try unplugging it (overnight) and then tried again in the morning.  Still not working.  I have since been told that because that the onhub system is out of date and I can no longer add any wireless points using that hardware thru the google home system (or any other system).  Can this really be true?

Hi criker,

Sad to hear that the troubleshooting steps given didn't work. Try this instead, connect your 3rd OnHub to your modem via the ethernet and set it up. Let’s see if it will receive and send out signals to your devices.

While we don’t have exact information about the OnHub discontinuation, we can still assist you on your concerns in the best way we can.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dan

Yes I did try to directly connect it to the working OnHub router - same problem.

Hey folks,

@Dan_A, thanks for the help.

@criker, could you unplug the Google OnHub for an hour, then factory reset it again. Once it is blinking blue slowly, try to add it back.

Best,

Mel

I tried it again (it has been unplugged for over a week since it hasn't worked).  I followed the instructions for the factory reset.  Held in the reset button plugged it in, held for 10 seconds (not 15) it pulsed blue fast - set a timer for 10 minutes) it went to amber for a bit, then back to blue - stayed blue for a bit, then amber after about 3 minutes - flashed amber since to 10 minutes.  Obviously can't be set up when amber flashing.

Unplugged for 2 minutes - plugged back in.  blue light, blue light pulses for about 45 secs then amber light flashes.

Go to home app - click plus - set up new device - select existing home - looking for devices

nest wifi router found - yes would like to set up this device.

enter set up code from bottom of device

agree to terms

"wifi router and point usage stats are on" got it

nest wifi cloud services are on - got it

where is this device (calling it backyard)

connecting to wifi router -

adding onhub to network - onhub works best as the primary wifi point in a network.  If you already set up a google wifi point as the primary wifi point and want to make your onhub the primary wifi point you will need to factory reset both the google wifi point and onhubb.  Then restart set up with he onhub as the primary and then add any google wifi devices as mesh point(s).

(I have a different onhub as primary so I don't need to do this).  Next

Returns me to the home screen and in my home I only have 2 devices connected - this device is not connected.  This is the same process as I have been going thru for the last few weeks.  The onhub device is still flashing amber.

sorry - I said in my earlier threads that I HAD done this - still didn't work.  It starts blue then goes to amber.  And it did it on the one I'm trying to hook up AND the new one I purchased just in case the old one was bad for some reason.

I had a "chat" with support today who told me that these units are not able to be added to an existing system now.  Too bad so sad - I am SOL even though supposedly the support for them continues until mid December, apparently you can't add units anymore.  This is ridiculous.

Hi criker,

Have you tried to reset your Google OnHub while connected to Ethernet cable?

Mel

Yes.  Same steps as above appears to be connecting but then won't show up

Hi criker,

Could you confirm which is the manufacturer of your Google OnHUb, Asus or TP-Link?

Mel

I have three onhubs set up in a mesh for my home.  I think I had a similar issue when i tried to add my third one as well.  If I remember correctly I had to remove/delete the network completely, factory reset all the on hubs and then set up the network from scratch.  *Google support also has a way to see your onhub router whenever they are powered on *via some cell signal inside the unit/not entirely sure how but they can*

Well what they are telling me now online tech support is that it is not possible to add an onhub system currently.  So there is no way that I am removing or deleting my network right now and taking the chance of losing the whole thing.

Hey folks,

@FJmanG, thanks for the help.

@criker, I suggest factory resetting your entire network and set the child point as your main point.

Best,

Mel

@mel  I am very concerned about doing that considering what I have been told by google tech support in chat is that at this time it is not possible to add any onhub - if I do as you say, I may not be able to reconnect and then I will be without wifi all together.

Hi criker,

I understand that this is not the answer you're looking for. I suggest continuing the conversation there to avoid confusion.

Best,

Mel

No problem - I have purchased a different system should be arriving tomorrow.
