Google WiFi Pro takes 2 reboots to work

Just wondering if anyone else has this?

If I power cycle the main router point, it will boot up for a couple of minutes then slow flash orange. If I then power cycle it again, it boots up for a minute (faster than the first time) & then works (solid white LED & functional WiFi).

Its been like this since I bought a 3 pack of them just after release in 2022 - annoying but not annoying enough to RMA it or anything.

Its connected semi directly to the fiber ONT (through a smart switch to handle VLAN10 requirements, which despite being "supported" I have never managed to get to work)

There are no logs to consult with to find out why it fails the first time, any ideas?

This may sound odd, but is there a way you can take this to a friend or a family members house to rule out the router as the issue?

One of the theory I was thinking was if your modem or gateway or whatever may require a Mac address to match up.

Is the switch necessary ? You may be introducing more complexity than is able  to be configured with this mesh system.  VLAN from what i recall is has limited support with google wifi.

Consult this guide on what the lights mean, it may be trying to tell you about something.

Thanks Apsilon,

Without the switch, it won't connect at all, just slow blinking yellow (as per the link you sent, indicating a network error), no matter how many reboots I do (I'm assuming its failing to connect on VLAN10, even though that's supposed to be supported).

With the switch, it fails the first boot up (slow blink yellow), then after a reboot, it works (solid white connected)

If I reboot it after that point (a day or week later, whatever), it will fail, then need another reboot to function.

I remotely triggered a reboot (enable IPv6) & it hung after that until I got home (performed the reboot dance & put the setting back to off, necessitating a repeat of the reboot dance). Preferred activities is off too.

Hi Apsilon, It's straight into the fiber box, no modem/gateway other than that & there is no MAC address filtering - as long as it's on the correct VLAN & creds, it should just work.

try this utility....lemme know how it works

Interestingly, I was intending to do some troubleshooting at the weekend, get some times & look at that troubleshooter. I went to reboot it & it came straight back up this time, I will continue to investigate (when the other family members won't kill me for taking out the internet for long periods)
