Google Wifi router cuts speed drastically

bbarancik
Community Member

I have a Mesh Router system in the house.  4 units.

The main unit is connected to Verizon Fios.  Download speeds from the modem to the main router are 1G.

Without any other points connected, and without any devices connected besides an iphone, macbook pro and LG tv, standing next to the router, the download speeds from the router are 250mb.

This is terrible.  Why does the router throttle the speed this much - even when standing RIGHT next to it?

I've tried IPv6 on/off, IP address changes, etc.  All of the things listed in previous threads.  Nothing changes it.

I tried a Verizon router connected to the same FIOS in the same configurations - 800mb download.

Please help.

thanks

Hello bbarancik,

Thanks for reaching out. We'd love to help.

A few questions: when did the issue start? Were there recent changes to your network setup? Are you using a modem and router combo? Is there a switch located in your network?

Please ensure that the Ethernet cable that you're using to connect to your modem and to your Google Nest Wifi router is secure and not damaged. Please try the other troubleshooting steps below:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set it to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Ensure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and that the Wifi points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters from your network name and password.
  • Change your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 on your primary and 8.8.4.4 on your secondary servers.
  • Unplug the power from your modem and Google Nest Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will remove all network data.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Lovely

hello.

I am unable to change DNS servers because it's requiring me to change ipv6 servers too (even know they are not in use).

I am using FIOS modem directly to Nest wifi.

All other settings are as per the instructions and still the speed is 250mb after the first router yet 850mb between the modem and router.

Hi bbarancik,

Thanks for the update! We want to check if you've tried factory resetting your entire network. If you did, please inform us if you still encountered the same issue or if you are having trouble changing your DNS servers.

Awaiting for your response.

Cheers,
Lovely

hello

I have had no luck after trying ALL of the fixes in this thread.   Even today, using the mesh, sitting next to one of the receivers 1 floor away (there are 1 or 2 on each floor less than 20' from each other), the download speed is 80mb.  Between the router and the first Nest it is 850mb.

The google mesh system is TERRIBLE.

Hello bbarancik,

I know how it feels when something isn’t working the way it should. Let’s try to toggle the Nest Wifi Cloud services:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Devices > Wi-Fi > Settings.
  3. Tap Privacy Settings.
  4. Toggle Nest Wifi cloud services off and then on (it should stay on), then tap Save.
  5. Restart the entire network, then test the speed again.

Let me know how it goes.

Sincerely,
Alex

Hey bbarancik,

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps that Alex suggested? Let me know if that did the trick or not, so we can try something else.

Cheers,
