Google wifi is providing half the speed of my modem’s wifi. App shows no other usage, no mesh issues

I have 400 mbps internet. My phone is showing 190 on a speed test app I installed. If I change to my modem’s wifi I stead of Google Wifi I get over 400.

This is not correct behavior. I looked in the Google Home app and ran a mesh test with no issue. I see the Google wifi is receiving 445 mbps download.

The whole reason I bought Google wifi was to improve speed and reliability. Why on earth is it slowing me down? Can I correct this or get a refund?

Hey, everyone.

I have something for you to check. This might not affect all of you, but it's definitely worth a look. Go into your Home app and the WiFi settings. If you have IPv6 enabled, try turning it off for now and see if it has any impact on your network performance. We've seen others mention this as a solution for them and I hope it works out for you all too.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info Jeff.

I just checked on my home app and see that IPv6 is already disabled.

Wingfan13

It is already disabled and I did not change that setting so I assume it comes disabled by default ?

I was getting 75 out of 100 with IPv6 on and 80 out of 100 with it off. Small bump only!

I’m having this issue, IPv6 is not enabled and prioritizing my device has not helped.  Any other ideas?

Hi, everyone.

Yes, IPv6 is disabled by default. Unless you have a need for it, it's best to leave it off. Thanks for checking that out for me and reporting back. I'll let you know if I find more out soon, but that is helpful feedback.

Hi Jeff

My Google Mesh Network will only return speeds of around 18 mbps as opposed to 105 mbps on my service provider modem/router network. This has been an ongoing issue for a couple of years however my speeds have deteriorated further of late. I have tried Google online support a number of times to no avail. The most optimistic solution offered so far was to set my ISP modem/router to Bridge Mode however I lose internet entirely which seems to have everyone baffled. Any further suggestions other than those offered by yourself previously would be appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

Like others, I only found this thread after buying the nest product and experiencing issues with speeds from fixed or wireless connections. I've tried all aforementioned tips to try boost the speeds but nothing worked and prioritising a device causes the upload speed to crash at 0.08mbps.

As you mentioned before, if you're looking for devices that have the issue to recreate the bug in-house, please buy back my 3 pack nest because it only presents a limitation to my setup.

If not, please direct me to where I can make a warranty claim regarding the known performance issues that* do not have a resolution date.

*edit to fix word choice & add that the software version is 14150.43.81*

Same same. The absence of a solution of a company as Google, is unheard of. Google should be better than this.

The community buys a nest to get more done in less time or improve their experience online. Instead, we end up losing our time trying to fix the issue and don't gain any benefit. I'd rather have my money back and save myself the year plus of problem-solving for Google.

I wish I had stumbled onto this thread before I bought my mesh system today!!!!!   lol.

Yes I think that applies to a lot of us (certainly me). It makes you wonder how/why in non of the test reviews this was mentioned...

I have gone through all the forums and updates have been said for 2 years. clearly this is not fixing the issue. I want a warranty refund

Hey, all.

Just to address a few things asked. First, I don't know how the numbers look as far as affected users. I don't have access to those data points. It definitely is an issue that we've seen for a little while now and our internal teams have been tracking.

As for the rollout schedule on the firmware, it has already started and will be to 100% of users before the end of April.

Thanks.

I also have the issue and it’s already july

Hi Jeff,

This is going nowhere.

I think it is time you (meaning: Google) came with an appropriate solution, as this has taken too long without any urgency to solve it: 1. fix the problem asap (preferred solution) or 2. Buy back the hardware.

We all know that the problem is bigger than the people that reach out on this forum.

Cheers, Brian

Hey, all.
The update version for both Google WiFi and Nest WiFi will be 14150.43.80. If you are seeing a different version number when you check in Google Home, you have yet to receive the updated firmware. Let me know if you have any questions about that.
Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I have the latest version of the firmware - 14150.43.80 - and am seeing the exact same problem.

Hey jeff. Any news on when thr update will be rolling out ?.Mesh is giving half of my speed. So for the meanwhile I'm connect to the modem but that beats the whole purpose of having a mesh wifi in your house hold.

Hello.

My wifi devices has update 14150.43.81 already on them, but the problem persists: Wifi device is giving 40 MBPS while my ISP gives 80 MBPS. Wifi speed test also gives same speed in Google Home app, but all devices connected to the Google Wifi devices do not exceed more than 40 MBPS.

What is the solution for this? Anyone.

I have the 141150.376.32 version is that up to date?

I don’t know.

I have this one also and I am still seeing this issue.

Hi, tibblet.

There's not a way to force an update, exactly. Sometimes after a power cycle it will grab an update it it's available, but the updates are pushed out in waves to devices, so if it hasn't come yet, it might just take some more time. You can try a power cycle to see if that works for you, however.

Thanks.

Hi, geebagel.

Are you able to check in the Home app which firmware version is present on your WiFi router? You may not have the newest firmware version and the update should be coming soon if you don't.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I too have had the same problem since purchasing the nest wifi mesh and router (3 pack). I was waiting for the FW version update to take affect, reboot all services and see if the issue was resolved. However, as at today (with the new FW installed), I am still getting exactly 50% of the download speed of my provider and if I use a different router (like Netgear), I get 100% of the download speeds. Any chance the devices could be replaced at Google's cost given this issue has been a problem for many months and is device specific (rather than a global issue)?

Thanks

Hi jeff,

I've recently found this thread that has the same problem as me since i just bought 6-9 google nest all wired to my switch hub and I'm losing about 80mbps when i connect using nest unlike if i connect it in modem. I saw on your past post the update should be out on the end of april. Its may now any news on that ?

Hi Jeff,

When is the update coming?  You've been posting here for nearly a year saying it's a known issue with an imminent update.

Please advise in detail.

@Jeff @abellaj
Will you please provide us with an update?

You said this was a known issue and fix was imminent.

An update for all of us who paid your company money for this product is warranted at this time.

What is the status of the "imminent" fix?
What was discovered on your end during the Root Cause Analysis?
When/Can we expect some relief from these issues?
What is being done to compensate your users for this terrible experience?

Jeff, what is the latest firmware version as of April 2023? My Nest wifi device states that it has software version 14150.376.32.  I too am experience issues to where my nest wifi speeds are half of the speeds I get via a direct modem connection.

I’ve come to believe that the issue is an inherent design flaw for which there is no solution with the current hardware which is why no solution has emerged. Hopefully when a new iteration of the product is released, Google will make an offer to those of us who bought the equipment that doesn’t meet the advertised speeds a free upgrade.

MK3,

I have to agree with you.  Otherwise, there would be no way for this scenario to occur.Running Google Speed TestRunning Google Speed TestRunning Google home speed testRunning Google home speed test

If you’re still alive Jeff, I have just fixed my speed issues by turning off cg-nat through my ISP. If you could get the engineers to take a look at that area of the firmware so we can get some firmware that works that would be great!

I have the same issue in Canada. I just changed ISP from Carry Telcom using Rogers cable line to Virgin Mobile using Bell Fibr line thinking that was the issue. My Google speed test shows 100mb down speed and I get that on the isp router’s Wi-Fi but I  only get 60 mb on Google’s Wi-Fi in the same room.

Any timeline for a fix as I bought new internet thinking that was the cause of the issue. Any workarounds, is it trying worth factory reset?

Dealing with a similar issue here. Google Home Speedtest showing consistently 840-860Mbps down (from Xfinity xfi modem in bridge mode to the Google Mesh.) When less than 2 feet away from the same Google Mesh (that is connected via ether to the xfi), best I can get over wifi is 36Mbps. It's painfully lossy to sub 12Mbps in an adjacent room where there is actually another mesh puck.

This is really poor QoS. I love the Home app / utilities but I should be able to get better bandwidth than this.

thanks,

Jeff

I'm in Mexico and paying for and recieving 200 Mbps from Telmex, but only getting 50 Mbps from my Google Nest.  I read above that this is a known issue and 'Google is working on it'.  Any news on a fix?  it is now January, 2022, and I have not seen any news of a fix.

Similar issue for me. Google wifi tests all devices and they have excellent connections, but when don't a speed test from one of the connected devices shows a horribly slow connection. But when checked from the main Google wifi point, the speed is great. Please address!!!

I just bought and setup Google Wifi with three points/devices and I encountered the same problem as you. Looks like I have to return it.
