Google wifi is providing half the speed of my modem’s wifi. App shows no other usage, no mesh issues

I have 400 mbps internet. My phone is showing 190 on a speed test app I installed. If I change to my modem’s wifi I stead of Google Wifi I get over 400.

This is not correct behavior. I looked in the Google Home app and ran a mesh test with no issue. I see the Google wifi is receiving 445 mbps download.

The whole reason I bought Google wifi was to improve speed and reliability. Why on earth is it slowing me down? Can I correct this or get a refund?

Seriously, I wish just once that Google would simply acknowledge that this is not a user-side issue. Every single thread is just:

Reset
Use Bridge Mode
Change DNS
Disable IPv6
Factory reset
Etc

They rarely acknowledge that the speed issue also happens with devices connected via ethernet directly. This whole situation is the poster child for poor customer communication. I'd much rather be told "We're aware of this issue and our team is looking into it." instead of being bombarded with the same basic troubleshooting steps in every single thread. It just feels from a consumer standpoint that Google is approaching each of these threads in isolation rather than logging the underlying issue to see where real problems actually exist.

I don't see a solution being posted to this issue, It sucks that we invest so much on this mesh router and they cant even provide a solution yet after years.

I'm getting 400mb/s download on the google home speed test when I prioritise a device (or if I plug directly into my modem with an ethernet cable) but as soon as the priority device expires, I'm back to 150mb/s. Interestingly, this does not affect upload speed and I'm always getting 140mb/s on upload.

A simple workaround is to permanently prioritise a device. Can you please make that happen Google? It's not a big ask after 2 years of hundreds of us troubleshooting this.

Ok folks, the ONLY fix is really to replace your Google router.  Or hide it behind a different router.  From the folks who "started" having this problem to when this problem "went away", was partially how people switched ISPs or how the ISPs reconfigured their network.

So in a way, it's not really Google's fault per se, but they did build an inferior product if they can't handle the different changes on the ISP side of things.

And what's on the ISP side?  From what I gather, it's the lack of IPv4 addresses and the ISPs are figuring out different CG-NAT options.  So while IPv6 turning it on and off might give you some temporary improvements (probably because of the network routing tables getting refreshed), it's not permanent because no one's going to be IPv6 completely.

There's nothing "faulty" or "broken" with the Google Nest/home devices... they just weren't designed to work in the way the ISPs are evolving.  And seems like Google's not investing in keeping up with the new compatibility and standards like the other dedicated networking device companies are.

So you can pretty much get any other brand of router, TP-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc. and it'll fix your problem.  If you're near a costco, go and buy one and try it out.  And if it doesn't work, then no big deal.

I've been futzing around with two sets of Google Homes (thought maybe I needed more mesh APs, so I had 8 spaced all around a 2000sq.ft home.  Speeds sucked.  300mbps is what I paid for... 10-50mbps is what I get behind Google.

When I switched to TP-Link's AX5700, only TWO units... covered MORE than my home... more range.  And I get 100% 300mbps from my ISP and on my phones.  A lot more options to create sub-nets and even a subnet for 2.4Ghz so my IoT devices works (the main reason why I stuck with Google Home in the first place).

Do yourself a favor and try a different hardware.  If you have IoT devices, make sure you get one that allows for a subnet of ONLY 2.4Ghz (otherwise you'll see disconnects when it flips to 5GHz on auto-mode).

The ONE downside of fixing this issue... I'm now hitting my data limit with my ISP.  Mainly cause now my whole household is streaming at the highest speeds... and finally able to stream 4K stably.

And if you can't return your Google Home stuff - keep it in a box.  If you ever move to a different ISP that has more IPv4 addresses or legacy NAT configurations, it'll work just fine.

Not to be argumentative, but I am not convinced of this.  I think it is crappy hardware.  I did nothing different with our AT&T 1 Gbps internet but swapped out our Nest router and 3 access points with an ASUS ROG Rapture GT6 and now getting the speeds across our house that we pay for.  Before we were getting about 500ish down and 120ish up.  Now almost 1 Gbps all the way around...

So any other company can produce a device that does what it is sold to do except for Google.

I would say it is Google's fault and that the product is not fit for purpose.

I have had the google mesh for several years. Through AT&T 25 mpbs, Sepctrum 600 and 300 mbps and now Tmobile 50 mbps service. I started out with 5 google mesh devices and am currently at 3 devices. I started out with close to 40 WIFI devices on the mesh (most active) and I am now down to most of the time 8 active devices but a max load of around 20 mbps from all devices most of the time. Things learned is the closer the prime mesh device is to another WIFI signal the more noise and network problems. The inbound download google mesh bandwidth appears to be divided among the mesh end points rather than servicing the heavely loaded device. 150 mbps into the prime end point means that each mesh device gets 50 mbps of WIFI. As I trimmed back the number of mesh endpoints and devices on the WIFI I had fewer problems. The latest change was to move the tmobile gateway approximately 50 feet and up 1 story from the mesh prime device. This caused the tmobile bandwidth to jump from 50 to 70 mbps to between 150 to 190 mbps so I get a little more than 50 mbps WIFI signal from the mesh. When I first started with Google mesh it crashed 6 or more times a day under load. Currently it has been weeks without a crash. I suspect that there is a bug that is activated under load. Since they have not been able to fix it after all this time I am in agreement that they probably are not going to be able to fix it but it can be lived with if you address the noise and loading.

I bought a low dollar Orbi mesh ($139 on Amazon) and it works great. I’m getting 80%+ of my download speed on my devices, and that is due to having 35 devices on the mesh.  My recommendation is to bail on this defective product and go to a solution that works.

No updates to this?  i've had this for nearly two years, same issues as everyone else.  1gbps service, 900mbps router speed test, but wifi on devices around 200mbps near the router, down to 40mbps - 80mbps as i go to other floors

When can we expect a fix? At this point, I would think about a monetary compensation for not being able to deliver what was advertised.

Hell yeah, but unfortunately no one at Google reads this, nor do they work on a solution. Let alone, take all of our problems seriously...

https://9to5google.com/2023/05/31/nest-wifi-pro-update-fixes-speed-test/

Speed test issues with the Google home app may be part of the problem but there is still performance issues.

NPazdan

Supposedly that update had been pushed out two weeks ago but there's no sign of it having helped anything on my end. Speeds still halved coming out of the router with every speed test that's been run over that time frame. It's crazy to me that the closest thing to acknowledgement we've gotten about this issue lately is a change log that claims to have fixed the in app speed test.

I’m currently working with google support on Facebook messenger support. They are having me go through tests to help isolate the issue. Everyone should contact them and provide them more logs. I provided them this forum thread as proof many users having this issue.

Did that for a while and gave up. Similar to the doorbell battery issue and now the Hub Max mic issue. I have spent way too many hours on the phone, chat, and emails with Google support to help them fix their crappy hardware.

I have too but giving them a chance. I’m a IT Cybersecurity engineer and can usually help companies support get their issue resolved. We will see.

This is my solution...

I bought the Netgear Nighthawk and connected the NH to the Spectrum Cable Modem. On setup the NH splits two frequencies 2G and 5G.

I then connected the Google nest into the NH router. (leaving that system alone to function for the house and ADT security) The NH router provides an additional layer of protection. CRAZY speed in 5G but that is only good for 15-20 feet. (my office is in the garage)40 feet away. To get the 5G from the NH to reach I added a Linksys wifi extender(setup is super easy)
Results:

1. let Google Nest alone(fiddling with it is a waste of time)

2. Nighthawk wifi router is insanely fast and maintain security and high speed

3. I have 2 wifi networks that never get overloaded.

4. I can free my mind from this google nest crap and MOVE ON!. WOOHOO!

Why are you using the Google Nest at all?  Why not just use your NH  and extender?

I removed our Nest router, connected the ASUS ROG Rapture GT6, which comes with the primary router and a secondary node for mesh, to our AT&T gateway....done....getting the 1 Gbps speeds that we pay for.  The AT&T gateway provide one layer of security and then the GT6 adds another. The only difference now is that I have to manage my ASUS router through it's own app, versus Google Home, but it is a very nice app with many more controls/functionality.

My google nest is connected to ADT security for the house and garage... If I did not have ADT. I would have returned the google nest... But it is all working great

carlk
Community Member

oh....

We have Nest Secure which is now being discontinued....ending date next May.  They offered to provide ADT self setup for free and a year of monitoring but then you need to use the ADT app....we skipped it.  I don't need another app to support our home...between Google Home to manage most stuff and the automations, the Nest App for the cameras, front door lock, and doorbell (which is much better than the Google Home app for managing cameras plus we actually manage the thermostats and Protect via this app also versus Home), MyQ for the garage door, ASUS app for the router, and AT&T app for the gateway....ugh....way too many apps to manage a home

Hey Jeff, sorry to reply this old topic but it seems like the issue was not fixed yet. I have a 1.2gb speed and I can’t get with the mesh Wi-Fi more than 100mbs. I tested some other routers and they can easily give me 500mbs ++ … any timeframe for this rollout of the software update?

Any Feedback???

Same issue, 5 feet away from router and getting half the speed shown by google.

Also I have this router for more than 2 year now and this has been always the problem

Saikai

I just recently bought this system and it was really good in the beginning but with time the speed wasn’t as great as I was expecting.

So 2 years into this thread, the issue continues. What a bogus product.

It was working perfect for like a month then they pushed out more software updates and they broke the device. Wi-Fi 6E works great but Wi-Fi 6 and prior are poor performance. I only have Wi-Fi 6E device so it is frustrating experience.

Currently using the Google Next Wifi Router + Point.

Connecting ethernet cable directly to the Nest Router, I get 950 down. However when I stand right next to the router and connect by Wifi I get 600-700 down. Even worse, when I stand next to my wifi point thats configured at the correct distance, I get 250-300 down!!! This is very poor performance for a mesh system. When will this be getting fixed @Jeff ?

I have been on multiple calls with google support staff and still see no major improvement.

You are lucky to get 600-700 down next to the router. I only get 400-500mbps max. I do not have any mesh network either. I have a case open with Google Support as well.

Just wanted to share my experience. I'm using Gen 1 google mesh system. I Pay for over 1 gig internet fiber optics. The wifi around the house hits 80 MBPS and when I hardline a single device directly from the router it hits 500 MBPS (half the speed it should get).  I can use other wifi routers and that same device will pull 900 MBPS when hardlined - what's going on?

I don’t know. I think it’s a google nest software bug.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no fix. I've been having the same issue for so long. I thought it was my ISP. Gave them the runaround for a long time and I'm sure a lot of extra work. I've tried every "fix" that I could find on the internet and none of them worked, not even a little.

You know what works, getting a different mesh device.

I recently got the Deco XE75. Prior, I was getting less than 100 mb/second down and 10 mb/s up on the Google hubs. Now I'm getting 650 dl and 45-55 ul.

Unfortunately, since Google won't fix their product. It's time to jump ship.

I would agree - I run my whole smart house on google products and was hoping that the mesh would provide the speeds it actually advertises (weird, right?)  I will probably be jumping ship in the near future as well.  It's a shame that such a big company can't sold such a small problem.  Just give the speeds that they advertise...

After months (years?) of waiting for Google to fix the issue -- or even respond to this thread ! -- I threw in the towel and bought the TP-Link Deco AX3000 to replace my Google WiFi system.

When the US class action is filed, please post on this thread so deceived Google customers can get their share of the trial award or settlement and recoup the money they spent fixing or replacing their underperforming Google systems.

As much as I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s still shocking the process I and many others have been through. Twice over 6 mths with 2 different support agents - who first appeared willing to help, I’m back to where I was, no fix, no support solutions to fix, despite all the well documented suggestions that don’t work, a process looking like it was going to refund only to be told oh you didn’t purchase via Google store so nothing we can do, go back to your retailer, who’ve already said based on their knowledge of the widespread issues, it’s a Google issue and not theirs!!

Chase support thereafter and the 2nd, like the first has disappeared. If this were some kind of start-up you may expect them to keep hold of customers money but this is a multi billion dollar company…..guess that’s the point, they are as beacuse they are so big they can bully global tax systems to pay the least legally, what chance has a single customer complaint to a faceless, supposed support agent?!!!

Reached another level of insanity today with network speed as 900mbps and Wi-Fi speed as 4mbps for no obvious reason for whole day then changed to 20MBPs next day. This is really piece of **bleep**.

Brianm

Yes it's absolutely worthless!

The thing is, when I didn't know the cause, I always complained and my neighbours laughed as they had good speed. I always thought it was something in my house or something else. Until I found the root cause: Google Wifi routers...

Now with an other brand, I get great speed.

But all the laughing in my face I had to go through, and the many many many times I re-installed everything. Grrr

Purchased my nest wifi system three weeks or so ago and wish I saw this post before I purchased it. I am having the same issues identified by all re slow wifi speed despite fast Internet connection
