Having to restart network everyday

RichJ
Community Member

Hi,

In the last couple of months I am having to restart the network from the app everyday.

My iPhone shows it is on WiFi but no data will load on any browser or app. If I restart the network from the Home app it then starts working again.

Also, on my MacBook Air and iMac the WiFi will not connect at startup until I restart the device, then it is able to connect to the WiFi network and have internet connection.

Is there any reason why this has started happening?

+ For gaming, is it best to leave the DNS on Auto or use ISP?

Thank you

Hi RichJ,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Google Wifi. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • Are you using a modem / router combo?
  • What’s the color of the light on the parent point?
  • Is this happening at a specific time?

Also, if you haven't yet, you could try the steps on this link to isolate the issue.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

I'm using an Openreach modem with the Nest WiFi.

The colour on the main one is a solid white light.

I think it happens at any time.

Thanks,

Rich

Hi RichJ,

Thanks for the response. Is it just a modem or does it also broadcast its own Wifi network? If it's broadcasting a network name, I would suggest enabling bridge mode on it. You can click on this link to learn more about this.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

It's only a modem.

Hi RichJ,

Thanks for the update. Were you able to enable the light of your Google Wifi? Does it change when the point goes out?

Thanks,

The light stays white all the time.

Hi RichJ,

Thanks for the response. If you haven't yet, could you try resetting your Google Wifi back to factory defaults? You could use the same network name and password so your devices would automatically connect.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi,

I will give that a go. Is the restore the only thing you think that might resolve the issue?

Hi,

I still get my iMac not connecting on first boot but after a restart it then connects. I have set it a reserved ip address now to see of that helps.

Thanks

Hi Mel,

On my iMac yesterday it took quite a few.minutes of it being on before internet was working via WiFi. macOS showed the WiFi was online. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi RichJ,

Thanks for getting back to us and sorry for the delay.

Make sure that your Mac OS is updated. Also, has it happened again?

Best,

Mel

Hi Mel,

It is on the latest version. It happens each time I turn one of my macOS devices on. Is there any other setting I need to change for this?

Thanks

Hi RichJ,

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Set a custom DNS at 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Hi Mel,

Thanks for that list. What is the reason behind number 3?

Thanks

Hi RichJ,

Some devices do not support special characters for Wi-Fi connectivity which results in network issues for those devices.
