Should we wait for Nest Wifi Pro?

Hi.

We just upgraded to Spectrum 1 gb internet so we need to upgrade our five year old mesh system to take advantage of it. We currently have three pre-2020 MacBook Pros, an older iMac, and several recent iPhones. We stream music from our devices to stereos and video to our tv. Videoconferencing using zoom and teams is very important to us as we work from home. There are three of us in the house, two adults, one teen. We use three levels of our home and the basement. We have two home offices on two separate floors. Will there be an advantage for us to wait for the Nest Wifi Pro or would we get the same functionality with our needs and current devices with the current Nest Wifi? Thanks for your help

Hi @STLSTeve

The most significant difference between the Nest WiFi and the Nest WiFi Pro is the support for WiFi6e or even WiFi6 in general. As WiFi 6 has some advantages and is the newer product, I would say yes, wait for the new Nest WiFi Pro.

  • The Pro is more future-proof with WiFi 6E support, sure, your current hardware does not support this yet, but your future device probably will.
  • The Pro is newer, so my educated guess is that support will last longer.

So my advice would be to wait for the newer version. 🙂

In addition to this, I'd also mention the dedicated wireless backhaul as one more great addition in regards to performance. Here are some more details on the benefits:

Here are specifications for all Google Wifi and Nest Wifi pucks:

That said, if you can find some Nest Wifi routers (not add-on points) on the cheap, those will serve you well too. Don't think you'll notice much of a difference, but time will show as reviews and benchmarks get out.

I don't work for Google.
