Home battery (solar power) not working since I got Google Nest Pro

Home battery (solar power) reporting not working since I got Google Nest Pro

My home has a Sonnen Batterie that used to report data to my Android or web app. Since getting the Nest Pro, the app reports the battery as being disconnected. I've followed the hardware installer's guides, rebooted everything, but still I get 'Your battery is offline' message.

I changed the network SSID and password when implementing the new router.

Previously using an IPv6 router it worked without a problem (and wasn't visible as a device). I've contacted the local Sonnen support team and they can't help me, saying they recommend direct connection to the router (which was not done previously, and can't be done now as the Nest Pro only has one RJ45 port).

I'm concerned that I can't access the data and worried this will also be the case when I attach a home charger for an EV (which I plan to do).

I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Hi @Joffa!

Thanks for posting in the community.
I’m sorry for the inconvenience that you’ve been experiencing with your Nest WiFi Pro and your Sonnen Batterie. I understand that this is a smart battery that used to report data to your mobile device, however just after upgrading your WiFi network with the Nest WiFi Pro your device started to send you messages saying that it was offline. Let’s work together to find a solution.

In order to give you the correct steps, I need some extra information. Here are some questions for you:

  • What is your internet plan and advertised speed?
  • How far is the device from your router?
  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • How many devices actively use the internet at once?
  • Is there a switch located on the network?
  • What other troubleshooting steps have you taken?
  • Have you changed the DNS?

In the meantime, you can check the following article: Troubleshoot slow Wi-Fi

I’ll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Daniel.

Thanks Daniel. Answering them in order:

  1. 47 Mbps download, 17 download
  2. Device is about 3 metres from router (weatherboard house)
  3. Yes
  4. About 12 on average (mostly smart home devices)
  5. No
  6. As the Wifi network finds all other devices, I haven't wanted to do a factory reset (takes about half a day to reconfigure all devices..) Apart from rebooting the Batterie and the Nest router several times I can't think of other troubleshooting ideas.
  7. No, I haven't - I don't think adding the Nest router would affect DNS allocation, would it?

Thanks for any suggestions

Hi @Joffa!

Thanks for your reply and all the shared information.
I can see that you have already performed some restarts to the affected device and also to the Nest WiFi Pro but are still having the same behavior.

In order to make sure that we are following the correct process. I will suggest you perform a 2-minute power cycle following the next steps:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the Nest Wifi Pro.
  3. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
    • Start a 2-minute timer to track.
    • Check the make and model of the modem, and make sure there isn't a backup battery. If there’s a backup battery, remove the battery. Otherwise, it won't perform a power cycle.
  4. Connect the power to the modem, then wait up to a minute until the modem fully powers on.
    • All light indicators must be solid colors.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable, then the power cable to the Nest Wifi Pro. Wait until it is fully back online.

If after all this process you are still experiencing connectivity issues in your smart battery, then I will suggest you get a switch and connect it to the network, then you will be able to directly connect your affected device to the network.

Tell me how it goes.

Regards,

Daniel.

Thanks for your replies Guarcax

In the end I concluded the Nest Plus cannot cope with the older 2.4 GHz devices such as my home battery (and also my new EV charger) so I've had to roll back to the old IPv6 Linksys router. It's a pity, as the older router gets 41.1 Mbps down and 16.38 Mbps up. The Nest Plus got 46.6 down and 17.4 download. Nest Plus also had simpler device management via Google Home. It's a pity the Big G requires us to either use devices they approve/co-brand or simply miss out on adding lower-spec devices to our home network.

If there's someone out there who can tell me how to use 2.4MHz network devices that don't 'work with Google' or have Nest, I'd be very happy for advice.

In the meantime I'm out nearly $300AUD and many hours of frustration by purchasing the Nest Plus.

Cheers, Joffa
