How to make my Wi-Fi points work?

jamesdb

Hello,

I have recently purchased the Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro three-pack.

When installing the Nest Wi-Fi router (first point) everything worked well. It created a new Wi-Fi network which connects me to the internet perfectly (I am using it now).

When I tried to connect the other two points throughout my house, the Google Home app would always hang on the "Connecting to Wi-Fi" screen for several minutes before telling me an error has occurred and to try again. After various restarts, I used the technique of another post here to physically daisy-chain the points via LAN to the original Google Nest connection and add the devices that way.

This worked fine and I can see the three points in my Google Home app. But after relocating the two other points throughout the house, they don't work - they have the blinking yellow light (while the Nest that is connected to the modem is working fine and has solid white light). In the Google Home app, all three show as connected and working, though running a mesh test fails.

What steps can I take to fix this? It is very frustrating as I've spent a couple of hours trying to fix this already and it was sold as plug-and-play to me.

Hi jamesdb,

Thanks for posting here in the Community. I apologize for the inconvenience you encountered with your Nest Wifi Pro router and the additional points. But no need to worry, help is here.

Before we get started with further troubleshooting, let me ask you some important details:

  1. Is the upstream device a modem, or modem and router combo?
  2. Is the child point within the recommended 20 to 25 ft (6 to 7 m) of the parent point?
  3. Are there any switches in the network topology?
  4. If there are, ask for make and model of the switch.
  5. How many points do you want to connect?
  6. What's the size of the environment you want to cover?
  7. Do you use the device in the same country it was purchased?

In the meantime, please check the following troubleshooting steps.

  1. Perform a 2-minute power cycle:
    • Disconnect the power from the modem.
    • Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the child point.
    • Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
    • Connect the power to the modem, then wait up to a minute until the modem fully powers on.
    • Connect the power cord to the child point.
  2. Nest Wifi Pro Firmware:
    • Ensure your Nest devices have the latest firmware. Check the Google Home app for updates.
  3. Hardwire Wifi points and other device:
    • Ethernet cable: To hardwire your devices, you'll need to connect each device together with Ethernet cables. It's recommended that you use a minimum of CAT5e-rated cables for Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi.
    • WAN port: This is the outbound port that connects your main router to the Internet. It's wired towards your modem.
    • LAN port: This is the inbound port that goes towards your wired devices.

Please keep me posted.
