Internet speed halving

andrewjparker

Hi all, I've just had a new full fibre connection installed in the UK from EE. The ONT is connected to a Gen 1 Google Wifi, and I then have a Nest Wifi Point and another Gen 1 Google Wifi.

The speed test via the Google Home app on the Google Wifi set up as the router is around 500Mbps, however when sat just two feet away Speedtest.net on my MBP is measuring around half that.

Mesh connection to both points is "Great" however the speeds are around 40 - 50Mbps from those, again measured in close proximity via Speedtest.net

Is it time to bite the bullet and upgrade my mesh system?

Hi @andrewjparker,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community! I understand you've just set up your EE Full Fibre, but your Google/Nest Wifi mesh isn't delivering those 500Mbps speeds to your actual devices. Even though the router itself is receiving full speed, your MacBook is seeing half that just two feet away, and the mesh points are dropping significantly to 40–50Mbps.

I appreciate your running those initial tests and confirming the 'Great' mesh connection—that helps narrow things down. I understand your feelings about this situation; however, it is necessary to confirm that everything is working fine. Because of that, I’d be happy to help you figure out if this is a configuration issue we can fix or if a hardware upgrade is the best path forward. To dive deeper, could you provide a bit more info?

  • What is the approximate size of your home in square feet?
  • Is Google Wifi the only device connected directly to the ONT, or is there an EE Smart Hub in between them?
  • How many devices actively use the internet at once in your home?
  • Does this speed drop happen continuously, or does it seem to get worse at certain times of the day?
  • Besides the speed tests you've already done, have you tried any other troubleshooting steps, such as a 2-minute power cycle or swapping the Ethernet cable between the ONT and the router?
  • Are there speakers, baby monitors, or microwave ovens near the Gen 1 router?

I would like to provide you with some additional troubleshooting steps that might help:

  • Run a speed test directly from the modem (ONT).
  • Ensure the cable is plugged into the correct WAN port on the Gen 1 unit.
  • Check if the router is inside a cabinet or near thick materials (brick, metal, or mirrors).

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo

Thanks so much for your thorough reply Eduardo. I made the decision to invest in some new Eero kit and that is working perfectly.
