Local DNS entries on Nest Wifi?

davidamar
Community Member

How can I configure or use local DNS entries in my local network? I found this thread indicated it is possible to use '.lan' suffix, and it says the name of each device should be its DHCP lease name, but how can I find what it is?

Basically I have a computer in my network and I'd like to ssh to it using something like `myComputer.lan` rather than remembering the local IP.

Thanks for this answer, but it is generic and not specific to Nest WiFi router. How can I see DHCP list? It doesn’t even have web UI. I thought it has a built in DNS server as well, why do I need an external one?

was that answer created by ChatGPT? 🙂

Hi davidamar,

Apologies for the delay! We do have a way to change the DNS settings. Here’s how:

1. Open the Google Home app.

2. Tap Wi-Fi , then tap Settings.

3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.

4. Select DNS. For custom DNS, enter a primary server and a secondary server address, then tap OK.

For more information, see this helpful guide: Change your DNS server.

Now, regarding your request to configure or use a local network, especially when changing its domain, we don’t have that option. We always recommend using Google domains and its settings if you’re using a Nest mesh system to avoid unnecessary concerns.

Thanks for helping, jhondika!

Best,

Dan
