Need help for installing 15 nest points in a 5 story home

Sir, I have 15 Google Nest WiFi (5x3packs. 5 Routers and 10 points). I have 5G network and 5G router (Nokia Fastmile 5G gateway 3). I want to use this network to cover this VERY VERY BIG 5 story house. My current connetion is like this. I used one Nest Wifi router to create the network with main Nokia router. Then the lan out is given to an unmanaged Gigabytes Switch. Each floor i connected a nest wifi point (router) with cable from this switch. Each floor have 3 or 4 points.

My problem is big. Most of the points are going offline (even those connected with lan cable). What is the solution? Can I create 5 Homes (1 for each floor) and use a single SSID on all floor? Im planing to place one Nest router on each floor and connect these Nest routers to main Nokia router through switch. (Each floor will have one nest router directly connected to main Nokia router with lan). Then create separate Home for each floor. Then create a Wifi network with Same SSID and password for all floor routers. 3 or 4 points will be added to each routers.

Does this method work well and get all ponts online and good connection?

Please suggest your best methods. Thanks.

Hi Eurostarbaby,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP)? Which Google/Nest router are we working with? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)? Do you have the Internet on your modem?

Let's try to optimize your Nest Wifi setup for your large, 5-story home. While creating separate Homes with the same SSID might technically work, it's not the ideal solution due to potential compatibility issues and a less seamless experience. Here's a better approach:

1. Single Home, Multiple Routers:

  • Designate One Primary Router: Choose one Nest Wifi router to connect directly to your Nokia 5G gateway. This will act as the main router for your network.
  • Strategically Place Routers: Position the remaining 4 Nest Wifi routers on different floors, ideally in central locations with good line-of-sight to each other. Connect them to the switch, which is also linked to the primary router.
  • Create a Single Mesh Network: Use the Google Home app to create a single mesh network that encompasses all 5 routers. This unifies the network under one SSID and password, allowing seamless roaming and device handoffs between floors.

2. Optimize Placement and Settings:

  • Experiment with Placement: Adjust the placement of routers and points to find the optimal positions for strong signal coverage throughout the house. Avoid placing them near metal objects, thick walls, or electronic interference sources.
  • Consider Ethernet Backhaul: If possible, connect some or all of the routers and points using Ethernet cables. This creates a wired backbone for the mesh network, improving performance and reducing wireless congestion.
  • Upgrade Switch (Optional): If you encounter issues with the unmanaged switch, consider replacing it with a managed gigabit switch that can handle the traffic and provide more control over network settings.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure all your Nest Wifi devices and the Nokia gateway have the latest firmware updates. This often includes bug fixes and performance improvements.

Additional Considerations:

  • Channel Selection: Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to identify the least congested Wi-Fi channels in your area and manually set your Nest Wifi network to use those channels.
  • Neighboring Networks: If you have many neighboring Wi-Fi networks, consider adjusting the transmission power of your Nest Wifi devices to reduce interference.

By following these steps and considerations, you should be able to establish a robust and reliable Nest Wifi network that covers your entire 5-story home, keeping all points online and delivering a strong connection throughout.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Dan
