Nest Pro PPPoE on Gig Fiber (still) very slow

"940/940" Mbps FIber (CenturyLink).

  • Using the ISP modem alone I get mid/high 800's UP/DOWN, and close to line speed.
  • I'm using Google's built-in speed tester.
  • Started with Nest Wifi directly to ISP with PPPoE. (ie. ISP modem not present) I have been consistently getting 800+ Mbps UP/DOWN for over a year.
  • Installed Nest Pro Wifi last week in exactly the same way (with the early Nov software). The same PPPoE to ISP. Over 7 days I got 200-450Mbps UP, and 150-200Mbps DOWN. (So, about 20-50% of what I should be getting.)

The software upgrade this week (Nov 16) did nothing. Zero.

  • Yesterday, I added the ISP modem back (so that it's processing the PPPoE), and switched the Nest Pro router from PPPoE to DHCP (and that's all I did). 800's+ Mbps returned. Of course, now I'm double NATing, which is not great, so this isn't a "solution."
  • It's clear, as I changed one variable, this is a deficiency in Nest Pro performing encap/decap of PPPoE packets. It's my understanding that Google Wifi and Nest Wifi processed it using CPU (instead of hardware), so the CPU was the limiting factor in throughput. It appears that Nest Pro is seriously CPU limited. I don't know if a software upgrade can fix this. PPPoE is one of the most simple and oldest protocols, so it's not like they could've screwed up the implementation. (I won't even start on the other strange practices it's doing in the 5 and 6 GHz bands - good luck connecting to the 6Ghz band unless you have a line of sight. (I'm a 25 year network engineer veteran to say that.)

Right now I'm 80% leaning toward returning the set of 3. I do dislike Google's Store policies in general (they couldn't even properly figure out my sales tax in Colorado for a long time...total amateurs), so the short return window will force my hand.

Hi txco,

Thanks for providing all the troubleshooting you've done so far. You're definitely an advanced user and I appreciate all the details provided. Can you tell me what speed test you're using? Are you measuring directly out of the Google Home app or by using another piece of software? Are you also able to check in the Home app to see what firmware version you're running on your router and points?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey everyone,

It looks like we've slowed down here. We'll be closing up the thread in the next day unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.

Thanks,
Jeff
