Nest WIFI upload speeds periodically slow down until restart

IMG_5219.png

My internet package includes an upload speed of 100 Mbps and these speeds are achieved.

The issue is that periodically the upload speed will reduce from 100 Mbps to a fixed 22.4 Mbps. The speed will go back to 100 Mbps after restarting the network.

This doesn’t appear to be related to capping by the ISP because the same thing has happened with multiple providers.

In also had the system working without this issue for a matter of years, so seems like it might have been a software update that caused it. I also bought new hardware but the issue remained.

I have also tried some of the settings tweaks like turning off preferred activities etc but this hasn't made a difference.

Hello TheRedPrince,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry for this experience.

Please answer the following: when did this issue start? Were there recent network changes made? Are you using a modem-router combo?

If you are using a modem-router combo, try to enable bridge mode and see if that helps. You can also change the DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server, respectively. Once done, perform a 2-minute power cycle. Here's how:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power from the modem then your router and points.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Lovely

Hi Lovely,

The issue started about 2 years after having the system and there wasn’t any network changes made to cause it.

I’m not using a router-modem combo so I can’t put it into bridge mode or change the DNS settings, as far as I’m aware.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the clarification. You can still try to configure your DNS settings on the Google Home app. Once done, toggle the Nest Wifi Cloud services to make sure that software updates are not stuck in the cloud. Here's how: in the Google Home app, choose Favorites > Tap Wifi > Select Network Settings > Privacy Settings > Toggle Nest Wifi cloud services off for a minute, then turn it back on > Save.

Keep me posted.

Sincerely,
Lovely

Hi Lovely,

thanks, I’ve tried changing the DNS settings, I’ll need to wait a few days to see if it’s worked.

Looks like it might be back to it’s usual tricks. Something did seem to change after altering the DSN settings but now back to reporting the 22.4 upload a couple of days in a row.

Is there anything else I can try Lovely?

Hi TheRedPrince,

Please make sure that your Preferred Activities are disabled. Conduct a 2-minute power cycle on your modem and Google Nest Wifi devices again. I also suggest toggling the Nest Wifi cloud services off and on to re-establish connection. Here's how: open the Google Home app > Choose Favorites > Tap on Wifi > Network settings > Privacy settings > Disable Nest Wifi cloud services and then re-enable it > Save.

Let me know if it helps.

Cheers,
Lovely
