Nest Wi-Fi Pro very slow

ITGUY2013
Community Member

Wifi is very slow compared to my old nest wifi 5. I was pulling down over 900MB now I'm only pulling about 450MB over a 1Gb connection from spectrum. I had a Spectrum technician come out and check their equipment. He showed me on his network tester that the connection at the modem is around 980MB. I ran several speed tests on my own from different sites including the Google home app and the speeds are horrible. I have IP 6 off, the DNS servers are set Google's. I've restarted and factory settings all the points and router. No dice. Just miserably slow and my other devices, cameras are not working well at all. Google ruined the nest products and now ruining wifi. Please remove Nest from your product names, it's an injustice to a once great company.

This is definitely a nest Wi-Fi pro hardware issue. Relocating resetting and factory resetting and rebooting is not solved the slow issue

Hi ITGUY2013,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are not having the speed connection you expected, even after a technician already checked the speed of the modem. No worries; I'm here to help! Here are some steps we can try to take to solve this:

  • Is there a switch located on the network? If it is, I recommend disconnecting the switch because it causes slow speeds.
  • Ensure you're using cables CAT5e or CAT6. These cables offer better data transfer speeds compared to older CAT5 cables (they are capable of speeding up to 1000 Mbps).
  • You mentioned you've changed the DNS. But just to make sure, have you tried "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4"?

Let me know how it goes. If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Nery.

This is a local home network it does not have a switch. All my cables are cat6 or cat6e. And yes those are the DNS settings that I use

Hi ITGUY2013,

Thanks for your quick response and for following all the steps. Here's one additional step that might resolve the issue:

Enabling Bridge Mode: Bridge mode can sometimes be the best solution when using an upstream router. It disables the wireless network and all router functionality, essentially turning your modem/router combo into a modem only. I share with you an article about how to enable the bridge mode.

Let me know how it goes. Feel free to reply to this post if you have more questions. I'll be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Nery.

I haven't tried this yet but I will this weekend and let you know how that goes

After running some tests such as hard wiring all my devices in the speeds are phenomenal using a cat6e cable when I revert it back to Wi-Fi speeds dropped by half so it appears only the Wi-Fi portion is suffering some type of bottleneck or possibly just a bad piece of hardware which of course I have just purchased five new Google Wi-Fi pros highly unlikely that they are all bad but then again you never know it is Google

I have to further researching my Spectrum setup I have a Spectrum branded modem only it is not a modem router combination therefore I'm unable to log into the modem and as I understand it the nest Wi-Fi Pro and its points are automatically configured to be in bridge mode

So I ran some test using just ethernet cables to all my points and devices and the speeds are phenomenal but when I reverted back to Wi-Fi the speeds dropped by half so it's either a hardware issue with the Nest Wi-Fi pros or something else going on

And making a correction to a previous post when I did test all my routers and Wi-Fi points via ethernet cable the speeds were the same across Wi-Fi and Ethernet which was only about 500 MB out of my 1,000 I hooked up directly to my modem and the output was only about 500 so at this point I'm going to get a replacement molding before I start looking back at the nest Wi-Fi Pro speeds coming into the modem or at 980 MB output side is only about 450.

So I replaced my modem from Spectrum with a newer model and version of modem software and getting much better speeds out of my Nest Wi-Fi Pro not nearly as good as the Google Wi-Fi 5 within 100 MB or so it's pretty acceptable right now I think I'll probably just tweak the placement of my routers this time and run some Wi-Fi heat scans

Speeds are amazing when hard wired in, but very slow on wifi. The routers and Wi-Fi points are very warm 🥵 to the touch and almost hot on the bottom

So as I continue to experience slow network performance and random network disconnects I called in my ISP technician from Spectrum to recheck all the lines from the outside coming in I had screenshots of the speed tests which are 980 megabits per second at the modem as well as coming out of the modem and through my cat 6 cable but once we put the nest Wi-Fi pro router the speed dropped to 427 megabits per second this was the case at each point as well between 280 and 427 megabits per second. I've asked for a full refund for my Google router and points that I purchased from the Google Store as I started my previous cases during the refund window. I even had a replacement nest Wi-Fi pro router sent and it's underperforming just as my original nest Wi-Fi pro router did. If a refund is not an option then please escalate my case because this is definitely a hardware issue with the Google nest Wi-Fi pro devices.

Does the Google nest Wi-Fi pro have a built-in firewall and can it be manipulated?

Does the Google nest Wi-Fi pro do its own network address translation (NAT)?

Is it possible to remove the primary nest Wi-Fi pro router from bridge mode?

Can the Google nest Wi-Fi pro router be set up for IP passthrough?

Bridge mode is automatically set on my nest Wi-Fi pro 6 router and is grayed out unable to change it

Someone from Google tech support suggested that I put my Wi-Fi points closer together which I did and I let that set up run for approximately 3 to 4 weeks My speeds are about 480 MB out of 1 GB there has been zero improvement in my Wi-Fi performance.
