Nest WiFi Pro wired connection is about 10% of what it was on Nest WiFi

So, my WiFi Pro arrived today and I was really excited to get it setup. I set everything up using the Google Home app and downloaded the updates. I have a fiber gigabit connection from my provider and their most recent modem. My wired connections are pegged to about 90Mbps. My Nest WiFi (non Pro) was getting 900+Mbps wired.

My troubleshooting has been the following:

  • Restart the Nest WiFi Pro network
  • Restart the modem
  • Restart all switches
  • Reboot the hard wired computers

My Nest WiFi Pro is in DHCP WAN mode and connected directly to the 10Gbps ethernet port on my modem. I am using a mix of CAT 5 and CAT 6 cabling and my switches are all gigabit or higher.

Plugging the old Nest WiFi (non Pro) back in yields 900+Mbps on wired connections.

I think something is wrong

This is a known and common problem that many of us are having.

I replaced my 3 Nest Wifi routers (all wired) with 3 Google Wifi Pro devices (all wired).  Devices are in basement, 1st floor and attic. None on second floor. Setup was great with Nest Wifi but took not full advantage of my 1gb fios plan. New setup is not faster than nest wifi (~max 350 mps) but more importantly signal is weaker on second floor and often drops.  This has not happened with Nest wifi. What should I do? Additional point? Wait for firmware update? Don‘t tell me to move points to different place (places worked with older model). Very dissatisfied with this product so far.

For wireless speed, have you tried to enable WPA3, mentioned in these guides:

And disable all preferred activities?

Thanks. But no preferred activities were enabled and wpa3 no option since many devices in my household don‘t support it.

WPA3 enabled will keep WPA2 enabled too for backward compatibility, so I suggest you try to enable it.

There _could_ be some old devices that does not support this dual mode, in that case either retire them or disable WPA3 again. I've had no issues with my old hardware that only supports WPA2. 🙂

WPA3 is required for Wi-Fi 6E / 6ghz. So enable WPA3, forget the network from your device, connect making sure you connect using WPA3.

This is a well documented product defect.  There are seemingly no configurations that can address the hardware and/or firmware problem.

I am returning the nest pro. What I've done instead is buy a refurbished three pack nest Wi-Fi from Amazon and for 30 bucks I bought the asurion 4-year warranty. I am also able to use my previous Google Wi-Fi points which I wasn't able to do with the pro. I paid $162 for the nest as compared to $400 for the pro. I'm good to go!

I am having a similar experience. In addition my upload speed is supposed to be around 22 megabits per second. It is after a nest test. However after a while, a couple hours or so, when I check it it is around 5 megabits per second?

I’m having similar issues. Replaced two Nest WiFi nodes with two WiFi Pro nodes.  The second node often drops offline.  Home reports a “good connection” between nodes, then the second one is offline. This wasn’t happening with the older Nest WiFi.

This is now a known issue for which Google will not provide any information on the status of an update.  See the post referenced below for where many others in the same situation, including myself.   There is nothing you can do to fix it at this point at is clearly a hardware and/or firmware issue.  Calls with Tech Support are indicating to return the item within the return window and buy it again, if so desired, after the issue is fixed.

I upgraded to the nest Wi-Fi Pro because I upgraded to the gig speed and I get less speed with this Wi-Fi Pro it sucks

As I'm sure you've read, there have been problems with WiFi Pro that cause speeds to be lower than they should be and a software update has been pushed that should fix it. You will just have to wait until that update hits your devices for you to see those benefits.

Hey Nv9,

I'm sure you saw MetalGlacier's response, but we do have an update to the Nest WiFi Pro firmware that is rolling out now. It should be arriving to you soon and hopefully that clears up your problems for you. If you see that update come through and you don't notice any changes, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

I got the software update, but it did not fix my speed. I am still getting 300 Mbps even though I have gigabit internet from Spectrum cable. When I had the Nest Wifi (not pro) I would get 500-800. Spectrum's tools show they are giving me 950. Google support keeps telling me things like "Try moving closer to the WiFi point". But this is not a WiFi issue...this is an issue with the speed at the main Nest WiFi Pro router, as reported by the Google Home app.

Same here, I'm new to the nest wifi Pro and just came from the Eero pro 6E and the speed tests were always above 800 Mbps, recently got the Nest Pro today as I saw the software update was coming but the Google Home test is always sub 600 Mbps.

I upgraded from the Nest wifi with 3 additional points to the 3 pack Nest wifi pro.  I do have the latest firmware update, 1.63.324946.  That has improved speed on some devices, however I have 2 Wifi6e devices, the Pixel6Pro and a Windows 11 pc.  Today was the first day that i got the 6GHz band to connect with the pc.  The 6GHZ signal was apparently not strong enough, even though it is right next to a router, to connect to the pc.  Today it finally connected and the speed is half of what I was getting when it connected to 5GHZ .  The same with the Pixel phone.  The 6GHZ band is woefully slow and tends to drop the signal too often.

So the new Nest WiFi Pro 6e is pretty terrible honestly. I have Fios with speeds of 2gb.  On the old Google mesh system I would get 900 over 900 wifi speeds.  On the new Pro 6e the best I’m getting is 500 over 400.  How is this even possible.  What a waste of money.

I have heard that they pushed an update that allegedly improves the speed.

Side note: Why are you paying for 2gb Fios if both google wifi and wifi pro cannot even take advantage of those speeds since they only have gigabit ethernet ports? just wondering.

From everything I have read it can handle up to 5gbs of speed?

MetalGlacier

While the wifi radios can technically handle speeds of up to 5.4 gb, you can't use that speed since the ethernet port supplying internet to the google wifi is only 1 gb you're only going to get 1 gb of usable speed.

interesting.  i didn’t see that when reading.  Are there any mesh networks out there that will supply the 2gb speeds?

Personally I have a Ubiquiti system but that needs to be wired. I didn't have much time to do research but this one from netgear seems to have good reviews.

Be wary of any WiFi systems that claim large connectivity speeds, as those speeds advertised are made up of the total speed of every wireless protocol available (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz). As you know, you'll only ever connect to one of these frequencies at a time with a client. Also keep in mind that current client wireless tech (usually 1x1 or 2x2 MIMO) is THE major hindrance to real world speeds on a network.

With a single frequency, especially 6 GHz in Nest Wifi Pro or newer systems, you'll only achieve the highest wireless speeds when in the same room in direct line of sight with the router. Regardless of whether you have 2.5 gig ethernet ports on the router.

I also have Fios gigabit speed, using pro 6e and wired backhaul and can't get faster than 400 when I am about 4 feet from the node. I believe it should be closer to 900 right? I am using a Samsung S22 ultra which can use 6e

Yes, you should be seeing speeds much faster. This is a current issue with fiber or PPPoE connections like FiOS that has been confirmed (by some customers) to have been patched by the latest firmware that hit my Pro points early Monday morning.

Restart/power cycle your Pro points to attempt to trigger the firmware update. The newest version is 1.63.324946

Thanks, been trying what you suggested for the last 2 days but still no update for me

So the update went thru last night and appears to be the ID you have listed above.  And guess what hahahaha.  The speeds are even slower now.  Test this morning shows speeds of 200 over 100.

Yep. I'm in the same boat. Not fixed.

What device is being used to test? Is it connecting at 2.4, 5, or 6GHz?

Pcoz

MSI ghost laptop.  5 but it’s the same over every test.  Meaning old google, new nest pro and now orbi.   Nest pro performed the worst.

Pcoz
Community Member

I would say yes.

let me put it this way.  I took the 6e nest out and put my generation 1 google WiFi back in and my speeds out in my driveway are 800 over 800.  In the house it tops out at 900.

Put the 6e back in again this morning as a test.  Beat speed so far today right next to the node and the best speed I get is 400 over 100.  They suck.

Did your unit receive the firmware update yet,  mine has not

Pcoz

I did.  Last night.  And the speeds are even slower.  It’s dropped now to 200 over 100

Pcoz

Mine has not.  Everyone keeps saying there’s an update but nothing that I’m aware of yet.  I’ve reset them I’ve try power cycling them and nothing.  No idea how else to force an update.
