Nest Wifi Pro - Slow speed test in app

SimeonPaps

Hi All,

I have a few issues with these devices.

I recently upgraded my home connection to 1000Mbps g.fast which uses PPPoE.

I've connected my Nest Wifi Pro successfully and and while the devices generally seem ok - the in app speed test maxes out at ~200Mbps. It feels like there is some weird shaping happening internally within these devices.

I've connected the ISP supplied modem and confirmed the speed is capable of hitting 900Mbps+ through speedtest.net and other devices in the house, however, when I connect the Nest Wifi Pro I seem to be artificially shaped at ~200Mbps.

I've tried factory resetting, turning on/off cloud services, making sure IPV6 is off, changing DNS setting within the Nest devices, confirmed the ethernet cable between the Nest and the NTU is capable of delivering 1000Mbps. I honestly have no idea what I can do to resolve this. I've had these devices for about a year and they have been rock solid at 100Mbps connection, but now since upgrading I just can't hit the speeds that a ISP supplied modem is capable of.

Any ideas?

I would love an answer to this be ause I'm facing the same issue. I pay for 1.5gbps speeds and when I connect to my ISP, no issues, but when on the Google mesh it seems to truncate the speed down to around 200mbps.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for posting in the community.
I understand the frustration of encountering slow speeds with your Nest WiFi Pro after upgrading to a faster internet connection. It seems the in-app speed test shows a maximum of 200 Mbps, while other devices directly connected to the modem reach 900 Mbps+. I appreciate the detailed troubleshooting steps you've already taken, including the factory reset and various setting adjustments.

There could be a few reasons why your Nest WiFi Pro isn't reaching the full potential of your g.fast connection:

  1. PPPoE Configuration: Some Nest WiFi Pro models might require specific PPPoE configuration settings. Verify that your username, password, and any additional PPPoE parameters (like MTU) are entered correctly in the Nest WiFi app settings.
  2. Disabling features like guest WiFi, network assistance, or parental controls can sometimes improve performance. Try temporarily turning these features off and see if it impacts the speed test results.
  3. Enable bridge mode: Make sure your modem is set up in bridge mode; this may cause difficulties for your Nest WiFi Pro. To confirm bridge mode is on, you should call your Internet service provider to get further assistance.

Please try the steps above; if the steps don't work for you, I need you to fill out this form to check deeper into the issue you are experiencing. Please let me know.
once it's done. Thank you.

Jorge

Going to that form takes me to a live chat/call option.

Google support are absolutely useless in troubleshooting this issue.

Hi,

  • PPPoE settings are correct - I don't think there is any way to change MTU settings within the Google Home app?
  • guest Wifi  and all other additional settings are off.
  • Modem/NTU is in bridge mode as the network termination device doesn't handle any auth.

Go into favorites then Network settings then advanced networking and make sure the first four toggle switches are turned on which should be unpnp, 160 MHz channel, wpa3, and IPv6. Once those four things are turned on, you should be able to utilize the 6 GHz network which should give you faster speeds. Although you're going to notice that this mesh system divies up your Wi-Fi based on the specific devices need at that particular time. So if it doesn't think that you're in need of that much speed, it will slow down the device slightly to make sure there's enough bandwidth for everything else on the network.

I think we need to separate out wifi "speeds" with what is going on with my devices.

1) The in app speed test doesn't use wifi and is capping out at ~200ish Mbps - My connection is capable of up to 1000Mbps and I've confirmed this using the ISP supplied modem router, hitting ~900Mbps.

2) Every couple of days one or both of the nodes seem to cap internal network speeds to ~20Mbps and will only start working at full speeds again after a power cycle.

Google support seem to have no idea, none of the suggestions here have worked. From searching around it seems to be that other people have similar issues which suggests that specific setups don't work well with these devices. One of the common factors seem to be PPPoE auth based setups.

Hello @SimeonPaps,

Thank you for providing additional details about the issue you're facing with your Nest WiFi Pro system. It seems you're experiencing inconsistent speeds and potential network bottlenecks.
I appreciate you taking the time to troubleshoot the problem.

  1. ISP Interference: While you've mentioned testing with the ISP-supplied modem, it's worth checking with your ISP to ensure there are no network-related issues or limitations on their end.
  2. Third-Party Interference: If you have any other wireless devices (like smart home devices, IoT devices) that might interfere with the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, temporarily disabling them can help isolate the issue.

If none of the information provided fixes the issue, I need you to fill out this form to get further assistance. Our specialists will be following up on your case. Please let me know once it's done. Thank you.

Jorge

Thank you, but, these types of throwaway responses are pointless.  If a user states they've tested with other hardware regardless on if its ISP supplied or not and it performs as expected compared to the Google product going back to the ISP does nothing.

Secondly lets separate the issues here - The internal speed test on the Google Home app is capping out at ~200Mbps. As far as I know no amount of wifi interference would/should/can impact this result.
