Nest wifi point (intermittent microphone issues)

Rob16

Hi

I was wondering if someone can help me resolve an annoying problem.

I’m finding that my nest wifi point intermittently does not recognise the “hey google” phrase command. My microphone is switched on at the rear and the only way I can get the device to work with the command above is to perform the reset (unplug and plug the cable back in).

The mesh wifi activity works perfectly fine. It’s just that the microphone does not pick uP my voice unless I reset the device.

This is a brand new replacement thinking that I had a faulty device.

Can anyone suggest something else I should be doing as it’s getting annoying to reset this device each time just so that I can use the voice commmand.

Another note is that I have other devices around the house which recognises “hey google” command. It’s only the nest nest wifi point I am having issues with.

Thanks

Rob

Hey Rob16,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's happening.

Could you try the other general troubleshooting steps listed in this article? Let us know how it goes. We’ll wait for your update.

Hi Abigail

The link that above was actually first thing I tried. As mentioned the nest wifi point recognises the “hey google command” each time I reset the wifi point however after a day or so the command is not recognised. When I I say “hey google” you don’t see the rings light up as it normally does.
I ended up replacing the nest router with a brand new one and same issues.

For the first year of use, it was working fine. I just started having issues in the last month or so.

Hello Rob16,

A few questions: A day after you reset the Nest Wifi point, does it stop recognizing the command every time or just occasionally? Also, do you notice any excessive background noise around the area whenever you say the command? Does the same issue occur even when you're near the Nest Wifi point?

We'll wait for your update.

Regards,
Abi

Each time I reset, the command is recognised and than a day or so later it stops working with no light indication when I say the command. It always stops work every day or so. I haven’t timed it from the time it works to the time it stops working but it’s around 1-2 days.

No excessive background. I close all my windows and the room is silent.

I try saying the command close to the device and also try picking the device up and say the command and the lights don’t light up.

essentially I will always need to rest the device to get the command working.

all my other devices such as mini and hub works perfectly.

also just to reiterate that I have also replaced my first nest wifi with a brand new one thinking that it was a faulty device but still having issues with the wifi point.

My first nest wifi was working perfectly fine for the first year and than last month or so is when I noticed that I was having issues with saying the command.

Hi Rob16,

Thanks for the update. Let’s check the logs on your Google Home app. Here’s how to check audio recording in My Activity:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the upper-right, tap the account icon.
  3. Verify the Google Account on screen is the one linked to the Nest Wifi point. To switch accounts, tap the down arrow icon, choose another account or Add another account.
  4. Select My Activity.
Note: This opens a list of all recent voice commands you've given.
  5. Identify the most recent command that generated a failed response.
  6. Select Details below their Assistant Query (this will expand out the details).
  7. Check if the commands you said were recognized by the Nest Wifi point based on the date and time of each activity.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Abi

Hi

im using the google home app on an Apple iPhone. I can’t seem to follow the steps above. I don’t have an account icon on the upper right.

Are the instructions above for the IOS devices?

Hello Rob16,

The account icon is on the upper right of your Google Home app. It's either the initial of your name or a specific photo set for your account. The instructions listed above should work for iOS devices.

Just looking at step 3.

How do I check the below?

Hi Rob16,

You just need to check the account listed in your Google Home app if that's what you used to set up the Nest Wifi point. Once you've confirmed it, do the remaining steps to access 'My Activity'.

Abi

see below all activity from yesterday. The activity below is from routines I’ve setup. I also spoke the command “hey google” many times around the wifi point and as you can see, it hasn’t recorded this in the history. My other nest mini and hub devices work ok with the voice command. It’s only the next wifi point that is having issues with the command unless I reset and it will work again for a day or so than it will not recognise the command.
