Nest wifi speed extremely slow, ISP not the issue

Paul311

Had the google mesh router for a couple years, and about 6 months ago added a second point. In the past month speeds have come to a crawl. I've had the ISP come out and do a service call, and confirmed no issues. When i test in the google home app i always get over 600mbps. But on individual devices speeds are rarely above single digits. Troubleshooting and resetting the network solve the issue temporarily, but it soon returns. I've read that a software update might have had some bugs in it, is there anyway to reverse the update? The performance is unacceptable, and looking to replace with a better product. But i also dont feel like i should bear the burden for replacing a product that failed due to no fault of my own.

Hi Paul311,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that your Google Nest router has been providing a low-speed connection to your devices for the past month.

To further assist you, I'd like to ask you a few questions to provide the correct troubleshooting:

  • What's your approximate home or apartment's lot area in square feet?
  • What access points are affected?
  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • Were there any recent changes in your network setup?
  • How many devices actively use the internet at once?
  • Did you change your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
  • What troubleshooting have you done so far?
  • What Google Nest WiFi device do you have?

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell.

House is 2400 sq feet, 2 story, so 1200 each floor and each floor has a Google nest wifi mesh router.

Both points (all) are affected. I even tried swithing the points physical location with each other, nothing improved.

Do i use a modem router combo? Like an all in one unit? No, cable modem supplies internet directly to google nest mesh router via an ethernet cable.

Ther have been no recent changes to ISP. In fact as I said, I even had them come out and do a service call to confirm everything was good.

Currently devices connected to the network are 29, but at least half of those are idle at any time, or super low users (water heater is "smart" etc.)

Troubleshooting was touched on but included resetting the entire network, which improved everything for a few hours up to a day each time. Also switched the 2 points as mentioned with no results.

The latest update is now the wifi will get so slow that my phone will actually drop wifi in favor of cellular while im in the house 10 feet from the router. Cell coverage in my house is terrible, mind you, and part of the reason we rely on wifi. Note that this is wifi, not internet, as even when not on wifi i can still access the google home app, and running a speed test there shows over 600 mbps to the router, while at the same time connected devices are getting single digit numbers.

  • Change DNS and toggle Nest Wifi Cloud services
    • Open the Google Home app .
    • Tap Wi-Fi and then Settings Settings and then Advanced Networking.
    • Tap DNS.
    • Select Custom, then enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
    • Tap Save .

  • Restart Nest Wifi
