Newbie help needed connecting to Sky router

Driftaround

Dear all.

I'm trying to connect my nest mini WiFi router to my sky q hub.

The mini is not showing on the Google home app, and has a slow pulsing amber light.

I've checked and rechecked cables, factory reset both devices, and reset the app, with no luck.

What am I doing wrong people?

Hi Driftaround,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that you're trying to connect your Nest mini Wifi router to your Sky Q Hub, with the device displaying a slow pulsing amber light and not showing up in the Google Home app. Your troubleshooting efforts are appreciated! I'm here to help.

To get to the bottom of this, do you mind sharing a photo of your Nest Wifi router?

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell.

Hi Russell.

thanks for your prompt response and forgive me the lack of urgency in mine.

A factory reset sorted out the orange light and gave me a white one, so all good.

Is there a set of instructions for me to connect my Google mini to my sky Q box?

At the moment, I'm just connected to it by Ethernet and have changed nothing else.

I basically just have 2 wifis to connect to Sky and Google mini.

I was hoping for an increase in speed, what settings do I need to change to achieve this?

Hi @Driftaround!

Thank you for your follow-up and the information you've provided.

To assist you effectively, could you please clarify whether "Google Mini" refers to the Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) speaker or a Google Nest WiFi device (router or point)? If you're uncertain, a photo of your Google Home device would be very helpful.

Once I have this information, I will be able to provide you with accurate troubleshooting steps.

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Ana

Hi @Driftaround,

Thank you for the picture. Based on the information, it appears you have a Nest WiFi router. I'm happy to assist you further.

To ensure your Google Nest Wifi is running as efficiently as possible and to boost your network speed, the most recommended setup involves putting your Sky Q box into a "bridge mode" or "modem mode," if that option is available.

Here’s why this setup is important for maximizing your speed and performance:

  • Eliminates Double NAT: When both your Sky Q box and Google Nest Wifi are acting as routers, they can both try to assign IP addresses. This "Double NAT" can cause network conflicts, reduce speeds, and lead to issues with certain applications like online gaming or video calls. By using bridge mode, you avoid this.

  • Centralized Network Management: Your Google Nest Wifi system is specifically designed to intelligently manage your home's Wi-Fi. It can prioritize devices and deliver a strong, consistent signal. When it's the only router, it can perform these functions most effectively.

  • Avoids Wi-Fi Interference: Having two devices simultaneously broadcasting Wi-Fi networks can lead to interference, which can negatively impact your overall network speeds and reliability. Bridge mode ensures that only your Google Nest Wifi is providing the Wi-Fi signal.

How to set up your Google Nest Wifi with bridge mode:

  1. If your Sky Q box supports bridge mode, you would enable this feature through Sky's settings (you might need to consult their documentation or contact their support for specific instructions). This will essentially turn off its Wi-Fi routing capabilities.

  2. Once your Sky Q box is in bridge mode, your Google Nest Wifi router will become the primary router for your entire home network.

  3. You will then set up your Google Nest Wifi system using the Google Home app, which will guide you through creating your single, optimized Wi-Fi network for all your devices. Refer to this article for instructions: Set up Nest Wifi Pro or Nest Wifi.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana
