Can’t add 2nd wifi puck to mesh network

When attempting to add the 2nd wifi puck (gen 1 where each puck can be the router or a mesh point) it doesn’t attempt to join as a point to the EXISTING wifi network setup on the first puck (eg as the router), but instead tries to join “itself” to become its own wifi network… and this of course fails.

how can I set up this 2nd puck as a wifi point, when Google Home doesn’t let me pick the existing network to join?

pe this is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve tried to set this up… the mesh works fine for a while, then randomly kills itself and needs to be fully setup from scratch.

ive already got my order in for a real networking AP solution to replace this but need to get the wifi working Avinash while I wait for the superior solution.

PS if the software was better for setup and troubleshooting.. I’d probably stick with the google mesh, but sadly it isn’t user friendly and has so many dead ends where you can’t fix things

Hi @scunliffe,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear your second Google Wifi router isn't being recognized as a point for your mesh network during the setup process. It sounds like you're only getting the option to set it up as a different router, rather than as a point. I'm happy to help.

I understand the setup process and troubleshooting may not be as user-friendly as you expected, considering your needs and the needs of all Google Nest users. We're always looking for ways to improve, and we appreciate your feedback to continue improving and meeting your needs.

To better understand the reason why you can't add your second Google Wifi router as a point for your mesh network, please provide the information requested below:

  • Were your Google Wifi devices set up before, or is this the first time you've set them up?
  • While setting up your Google Wifi point, have you confirmed you're selecting the same home where you have set up your Google Wifi router?
  • Did you try to set up the points wirelessly or through a wired connection?
    • The points must be set up wirelessly before plugging in Ethernet cables for a wired mesh.
  • Are you trying to set up a total of 2 Google Wifi devices or more?
  • What's the color of the lights on the Google Wifi router and the Google Wifi point?
  • Is the Google Wifi point within the recommended distance from the Google Wifi router?
    • The recommended distance is between 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7 meters).
  • Does any Google Wifi device broadcast a custom SSID?
  • Do you have any switches in your network setup?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Anders
