Request for Assistance with Intermittent Lag and Stutter on Mesh Network

I am reaching out to seek assistance with a recurring issue I am experiencing with my Google Nest WiFi setup, which is crucial for my streaming activities from my PC to various devices within my home.

Overview of My Setup:

  • My primary PC is connected via an Ethernet connection to the Google Nest Hub.
  • The streaming targets include another PC, an iPad, and an iPhone, indicating the issue is not device-specific.
  • My home network consists of 3 Google Nest Pros, strategically placed within 25-30 feet of each other to ensure optimal coverage.

Issue Encountered: Despite the Google Nest app indicating a "great" health status for the mesh network, I am encountering intermittent stutter and lag during streaming sessions. This problem varies in severity, sometimes lasting several seconds, significantly impacting the quality of my experience. The consistency of these disruptions suggests an underlying issue with network performance.

Attempted Diagnoses and Limitations:

  • The entire setup utilizes Ethernet connections where possible, isolating the wireless component to the connections between the Google Nest Pros.
  • I have attempted to identify the cause through the Google Nest app; however, it provides limited diagnostic tools or options for network optimization.

Specific Concern: I suspect the 2.4 GHz band may be contributing to this issue, yet I find myself unable to verify this hypothesis or selectively disable the 2.4 GHz frequency for troubleshooting purposes.

Given the above, I kindly request your guidance on how I might improve my network's performance or any steps I can take to diagnose and potentially resolve these interruptions. Specifically, if there is a way to disable the 2.4 GHz band or any other recommendations you may have to enhance my streaming experience.

You're on the right track suspecting the 2.4GHz band as a potential culprit for instability when you're streaming. While turning it off altogether isn't possible with Google Nest Wifi, here are some other approaches that might help you troubleshoot and improve your streaming experience.

 

Prioritize 5 GHz for any streaming devices.

To encourage your streaming devices to connect to 5GHz, move them closer to a Nest Wifi Pro for a stronger 5GHz signal. Consider disconnecting any devices from the network to reduce congestion on the 2.4GHz band. Doing so might nudge your streaming devices to the 5GHz band.

 

Check for any updates.

Ensure your Nest Wifi system and all the devices that take part in your streaming have the latest software updates.

 

Investigate wired alternatives

Consider connecting your streaming devices (especially the PC) via an Ethernet cable for the most stable and reliable connection, eliminating potential Wi-Fi interference issues.

If none of those suggestions improve your connection, you could consider contacting your internet service provider to ensure there are no issues on their end affecting your internet connection stability.
