Slow download/upload speed

Seems this is an unsolved issue from Google that is impacting its reputation. I've been dealing with this issue for more than 30 days and I always received the same response: A Dedicated technical team is going to contact you by email or by phone. They are monitoring and gather information from your router.

I have 1 GB for download/upload from my ISP which works when I connect my computer directly to the wire. Google Nest WiFi is giving me less than half of that.

I've been seeing many issues in this regard and I recently upgraded to Nest WiFi Pro expecting to have better performance without success.

Support keeps telling me the same. A dedicated team is going to contact you and gather information. Because waiting on them after requesting an extension of the return date and they never call me or contact me. Now I'm stuck with Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi pro with exactly the same problem and no one from Google is answering my question or responding to the many cases I've been creating.

I am VERY VERUY DISSAPOINTED with Google Service. I would not recommend using its product.

If you were to search the forum for my posts, you'll see that after years of success using Google WiFi (gradually replacing with Nest branded router / points), my performance suffered terribly despite no changes in my layout or configuration. You'll also see that I suspect firmware changes made the mesh less forgiving about physical layout, but offered better max speeds when ideally arranged. My mesh download / upload speeds with a gigabit FiOS service maxed out at about 650Mbps, and I enjoyed that for the last month or so.

Well...all of that fell apart in the last few days. I'm guessing it was another Nest WiFi firmware update. My mesh was incredibly slow yesterday. This morning it was unusable. I restarted the mesh to no avail. I finally walked the house and manually power cycled all four units. Now, about half an hour later, I've got a usable signal at my desk, but with less than half the throughput I had been getting just a week ago.

I use a variety of means, btw, of testing speed. At my desk, the most common are Google's own web based speed test, and then I use Ookla's speed test -- alternative the web UI and the Windows applet (same result). Through is fair, but dreadfully disappointing -- and I have, btw, verified that my FiOS gigabit gateway is delivering about 880Mbps to the Nest router, both up and down.

Sadly, the experience is wildly inconsistent. I clearly can't count on this product to support my ability to work from home or to keep all the wireless devices in my house functioning.

I ended up getting rid of my system because I could not depend on it to keep me online. Worked great earlier in the year when I bought it, but something changed mid year and it has been unreliable ever since.

There could be many variables here. What device is being used to test speeds via the Nest router(s)? If wireless, how far are you from the connected unit? What WiFi band is the connected device utilizing? What method is being used to test speeds?

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/13007303

I'm running speediest from Google home on my iPhone. Running it literally close to the unit (less than 3 feet). So the question is why so many variables and the degradation of the speed is so big? That link recommend to use an alternate speed test app from your phone or computer. I used speediest.net from my iPhone and I got worse speed 50-80 mbps.

What did you replace it with, and how has your performance been since?

Went with Asus zenwifi ax6600 xt8. Performance is better but it is Wifi6 so not really apples to apples but I'm happy with it so far. Has been rock solid since install.

Well I upgraded to Nest Wifi Pro (wifi6) without any difference.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Mel Thank for your response.

I do not have any modem router combo. The internet is connected directly to one of the mesh.

I tried before your recommendation several time without success. I did it one more time with the same results.

Thanks.
