Slow internet - issue with firmware 14150.376.32 ?

Sparkster

I have a Google Nest router and three wifi points set up in a mesh. Has been installed for two years and has worked great until about six weeks ago. Internet speeds will just suddenly go really slow - my fibre connection is 360Mbps, but when I do a speed test it usually shows nothing more than about 2Mbps. My computer is connected with an ethernet cable, so that rules out a wifi issue. Restarting the router resolves the issue, but I can't keep doing that every day. I have been through my ISP and it's not an issue at their end.

I have also noticed I can immediately fix the issue by opening the Google Home app on my phone and clicking "Run a speed test". As soon as that runs everything comes back and we get normal speeds and service again. This leads me to believe it is a Nest software issue. My firmware version is 14150.376.32 and this seems to have come out around the time I started seeing issues.

I have really invested in Google Nest with wifi, doorbell, cameras and home minis all over the house and this issue is really frustrating - to the point I just want to strip the Google Wifi out and replace it with another brand.

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

  • Using the Google device itself as the router - no ISP supplied equipment in use
  • All the devices in the house experience the slow speed at the same time
  • Walls/glass are not an issue. This happens on my computer which is using an ethernet cable to the router. It's not a wifi issue
  • Not special characters in network name password - this hasn't changed in two years
  • Tried unplugging multiple times

I will give turning off IPV6 a try. I'm reluctant to factory reset because that is a total PITA, but will set aside time to do that. I'm confident it's the software update because **nothing else has changed in two years** and it was working great.

I have Google Wifi model 1304 (not Nest), and I'm getting the same symptoms. In my case I have 4 access points (one Cat 5-connected to the modem and the other three around the house). Software version 14150.376.32. IPV6 is off.  I can restore high speed occasionally if I reboot the Google system and then I see 800 Mbps or so, but very soon after than (less than an hour for sure) it goes back to 60-90 Mbps. I've verified that the Verizon Quantum router (set to not have wifi radio enabled) is achieving close to the 1 Gpbs that I'm paying for. Not sure what you mean by primary and secondadry servers (reading the instructions from Abi above). Would LOVE to have a fix for this- looks like it's been an outstanding issue for many folks for most of 2022 at least!

Hey DavidA1,

I'm sorry to hear you're having the same issue. The troubleshooting step you're referring to is regarding changing your DNS server using the Google Home app. Here's how:

Open the Google Home app.

Tap Wi-Fi > Settings > Advanced Networking.

Tap DNS.

Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server

Tap Save.

More details here. Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Hi Abi

Success!  Turned out that I had turned off ipv6 on the modem but not the Google WiFi. After doing that out airfares View to be stable and pretty fast at least to the hub. I’m still making it at around 250Mbps when at the main AP and a bit over 100 elsewhere, so would still like better performance but the initial problem seems cured. Any ideas about increasing typical WiFi speed to devices?

I'm still getting the same issue. It happened again this morning, getting 0.5Mbps. Went into Google Home app, clicked run speed test, wait 45 seconds, speeds all come back to > 200Mbps

IPV6 was already turned off when I checked the Google Home app

The only thing left for me to try is a factory reset, but this will have to be done over Christmas as I work from home and this will take me out of action setting everything up again.
