Slow internet speed on nest wifi than ISP router

Raheez
Community Member

Purchased new set of nest mesh wifi. I am seeing one fourth (100mbos) the internet speed on mesh wifi when compared to ISP provider router (500mbps). I have one nest router and 2 points each places in different floor of my home no interference with any other object. when I test my speed connected to ISP provider wifi router I am getting 500Mbps upload and down load on all 3 floors. but Nest WIFI has 100Mbps upload and download. Is there a fix for this issue?

Please help me.

1. Unplug your ISP modem/gateway and your Nest router.

2. Unplug all the ethernet cables from your ISP gateway/modem/router and leave your devices turned off for 2 minutes.

3. With all the ethernet cables plugged off, only connect power to your ISP's gateway. Wait another 2 minutes for it to completely boot.

4. Connect the Nest router to your ISP's gateway. Make sure you connect the WAN port of your Nest router to the LAN port of the gateway. Now, turn the power on your Nest router.

5. Connect the rest of the ethernet cables.

Test your speed. Let me know if this helped! 🙂

No luck, still the same

I am having the exact same problem and I am just about ready to give up on the Google Nest Wifi. My Google Nest Wifi gives me speeds of 100 Mbps or less while my Comcast ISP Wifi provides 500 Mbps. When I asked the question on this forum, someone suggested to enable Bridge Mode on my ISP Modem/Router and that will increase the speed of the Google Nest Wifi. However, this did not work. I still get less than 100 Mbps with the Google Mesh Wifi regardless of whether or not Bridge Mode is enabled.

When I contacted Comcast, they said that maybe I should have the the latest XB8 Modem/Router instead of the XB7 I was using. They sent me the XB8 Modem/Router, I set everything up, and I'm still getting less than 100 Mbps speed on the Google Mesh Wifi while my Comcast ISP Wifi is still getting speeds of 500 Mbps or less. I have run out of options.

Hi folks,

@twindevs, thanks for the help!

@Raheez and MGexplorer, thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your Google Wifi speed. I see that you've already tried some troubleshooting steps. To isolate the issue, could you try changing the DNS servers and toggle to cloud services? You could click on this link to learn about changing the DNS servers.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

Thank you for your response. When I go into my DNS Settings, there are three options:

Automatic

ISP

Custom

The only viable option to choose appears to be ISP. When I switch to the ISP option, it automatically reverts back to Automatic. If I choose Custom, it asks for server information.

You mention toggling to cloud services, but there do not appear to be any option for cloud services.

Thank you,
Mark

Hi MGexplorer,

Thanks for the response. For the DNS settings, please try the following steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Wi-Fi and then Settings Settings and then Advanced Networking.
  3. Tap DNS.
  4. Select Custom, then enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
  5. Tap Save .

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

I just tried the steps you outlined above, and still nothing changes.

More specifically, after I made your suggested Custom DNS changes, I first did speed tests with Bridge Mode disabled on my Comcast modem/router. No change.

Then I did speed tests with Bridge Mode enabled, after completely powering down and powering up the Comcast modem/router and the primary Google Nest pod. Google Nest speed is consistently below 100 Mbps.

Note that I am sitting right next to the Comcast modem and the primary Google Nest pod when I do the speed tests. And, I do speed tests via the Comcast speed test and the Google Nest speed test. Again, Google Nest speed is consistently below 100 Mbps.

I am ready to give up.

Thank you for your suggestions, though.

Hi MGexplorer,

Thanks for trying the steps. We'd like to know more about this. Please fill out this form so we could investigate further.

Thanks,

Hi Edward,

I've given up and decided to dismantle Google Nest. It is not worth it to me to spend any more time and aggravation on such a simple and straightforward setup. It's been going on for too long.

I do appreciate your help!

Best, Mark

I have returned mine and tried other products like TP link. The speed on the points was better than nest points. How ever someone recommended to use two nest routers instead of points, so I have ordered two nest routers and will try them next week. Will keep you posted here.

Hi Edward,

I did receive your response and I appreciate you following up. I have no other questions and completely disconnected and disassembled the Google Nest network. It's too late for me to return it all, so I will be donating it.

Best,

Mark

I have set up using 2 routers I am getting speed close to ISP provider on both, but Sometimes the TV buffers as it’s connected via Ethernet….I looked at the specs of the points and they were designed to deliver half the speed of the router, we cannot expect same speed as the nest router (correct me if I am wrong). Support team should have informed us about it. Again thanks everyone for the support. But over all I am happy with 2 router set up.
