Slow network speed on Google WiFi mesh

Johnnys

I’ve had a Google nest wifi for some time and have had it consistently slow my Internet speeds.  I’ve had the ISP come over and perform diagnostics and Internet is coming in at 500mbps, but nest slowing the speed to the point where TVs get blurry and Internet becomes slow.   The speed returns only when performing a speed test on Google home app or when resetting internet.  The speed stays fast for about a day and then reverts.   I’ve seen several posts on this issue, but none of resolution.  This appears to be a product issue.  I’ve done all basic remediations provided (setting preference, priority, reset, etc) and none of worked.  Other users seemed to have gotten frustrated by posts and stopped responding.   Is there any remediation for this?

You can try unlinking your mesh and then linking it back (full reset)

Did you plug it in to your moden or router? You should plug it in to your modem

I will attempt a factory reset. The nest is plugged directly to the modem.  I no longer have a separate router.   The nest is functioning as the router/mesh.  If this problem doesn’t get solved, I will be throwing the Google nest wifi out and going back to the ISP router.

There are multiple articles on the web about these slow speeds being a product/firmware issue.

https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/12/23454915/google-nest-wifi-pro-update-fix-slow-internet-speeds

spoiler alert, I did that and the issue persisted

maybe try updating the sofatware of the mesh?

Software updates happen automatically, but certainly during. A force reset.   I’ve done a reset and have the same issue.  Starts fast and slows down over time.  Only way to speed it back up is through a speed check or restart.  Definitely a widespread Google product issue.

how does one do that?

Hello folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.
  • You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Hi AbigailF.  I am using a modem from my ISP, with the Google Nest WiFi serving as the direct router.  There are no pauses devices.

All settings and specifications were as you noted above, except the DNS server was set to automatic and I have now changed it to the custom IP addresses shown above.  I will monitor it the next few days and see if it improves.

Abi, I've already done all of those steps. They've been repeated countless times on this thread.

And no modem, I am using Verizon Fios directly to google nest wifi, and I have the wifi turned off on the fios router. And no paused devices.

Hi AbigailF.  I’ve made all the changes that you suggested.  The main one being the custom IP address.  I was optimistic that it would work but we are experiencing poor Internet speed again.    We are back to daily resets.    Any other suggestions?
