Slow upload speeds (Nest Wifi)

Joran
Community Member

Hi Guys,

I have been having issues with the upload speed of my Nest wifi. I am getting 40-50mbs down and between 0 and 5mbs up from any device (wired or via Wifi).  The upload speed from the router and the modem is 50mbs up and 20mbs down consistently tested directly from the modem or via the google app and the central device.

The mesh network tests all show "Great Connection".

It is a big issue for any video or zoom calls as I can hear and see everyone but my outbound signal is rubbish.

I have tried a full reset of all of the modem, router and points. ISP has confirmed that the connection and speed is good on their side (confirmed by the router and modem speed tests). The issue also persists if I prioritise a device e.g. the upload speed does not improve.

Any assistance welcome. No issues like this with my previous wifi network.

Any assistance welcome.

Hi Jeff,

Yes I saw the reply but it did not help.  It is a very unusual situation. I spent 2 hours to google support the other day but did not get a resolution.

I plugged my netgear router to the fiber modem and it worked perfectly with the laptop. Every other device on the Google router worked perfectly getting the right up and down speeds.

What I ended up doing was to connect an old Netgear router via a cable to the Google Nest Wifi Hub and basically ran another sub network. When the netgear router was interposed it worked perfectly.

There is a problem with the laptop and google nest wifi, if it is the VPN or something else as it is a work computer. The device is ok with other routers, the router and wifi is ok with any other devices. But the two together cause an issue.

As I said earlier, I fixed it by interposing a Netgear Router that the Laptop can connect to and it is fine. Not an ideal situation but it worked.

There are some automagic QoS happening behind the scenes. It tries to adjust to your bandwidth, but it doesn't always do a good enough job. Capping of upload speed is one of the most commented thread in this community:

Theres not much you can do about it. You could try to play with the preferred activities settings, but the automagic QoS will never be fully disabled.

I have disabled all those, but I have 1000/1000mbps fiber.

I don't work for Google.

Thanks for the update, Joran.

Before marking this as resolved, I'll leave it open a bit longer to see if anyone has any other input on this to get you to that ideal situation. I'm glad you found a working solution, but let's see if any  more input from the community helps out. Thanks for being patient on this.

Hi,

Same issue here. I have a simple setup - NBN Modem (Telstra) and Google Nest Router with 2 wifi points. I have a 50Mbs/20Mbs plan.

Last week I noticed that I had bad upload speeds occurring during the day, but thought it was just a bad NBN connection. Restarted all and had no improvements.

When I prioritized a device, I was expecting most/all bandwidth to go to that device. Download speeds remained the same, but my upload speeds were capped at 0.1Mbs!!!

I have spent hrs trying to reset modems and routers etc... and also been on a chat with google support, but it is still not resolved.

My case number is: 3-2371000032626

Any help to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Peetehood,

This was exactly what was occuring for me as well. I was getting 0.01-0.08 up the majority of the time from the dell work laptop. Other devices were much higher e.g. getting the 20mbs up.

Is your issue with a single device or all devices on your network?

Pretty much any device that I set a priority on...

Hey, everyone.

It's been a while since we checked in here and I wanted to touch base and see if everyone was still seeing this issue actively or if we're having improvement on this. If you're still seeing the same problem, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

Same issues, same solution is still working for me.

Hi, petehood.

Sorry that you're seeing the slow speeds that you're getting. Those are really low! By any chance have you received the latest firmware update yet? It's rolling out now. If you open the Home app and go to your router in the device list, you can click on settings to see the software version. Would you mind sharing what version you have there?

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I am running Software version: 14150,43.80

Happy to check my speeds again if you believe this may have fixed the issues.

Hi Jeff,

Same issue - had router and point replaced under warranty, and no difference.

Very frustrating.

I’m having the same issues with upload speeds.  Google Home speed test is 35 down, 5 up - same as my broadband provider says.  But Speedtest app shows 34 down, but only 0.5 up.  Also get frequent brief disconnections (I listen to radio all day while WFH via Nest points which drops out for a few seconds several times each day).

I’m on software version 14150.43.81.

I have the same exact problem with the latest firmware: connected directly to the ISP fiber modem, I get full download speed (100Mbps) and full upload speed (100Mbps). When connecting with the Nest Wifi, I get full download speed on all devices but max 5Mbps upload speed (wifi and ethernet). If I set up a priority device, the upload speed is ok (100Mbps) but only on the priority device. I ended up using my old router. What a waste of money. I'm very disappointed with Google... no solution so far. The Google fanboy in me is leaving... Have to change my phone, I've had Pixels for years but I decided that I won't buy any more Google products 😞

+1 same as above... Upload is slowed down by Google Nest so I can't use WebEx or upload photos to Slack. Strangely, uploading to Facebook works but not Slack... Disconnected Google Nest wifi and everything is 100%.

This seems to be a very serious problem for a high end wifi router!?

Okay so I am going to throw my 2 cents in here...

I have been having issues with my set up since I purchased a wifi router and 2 points. From what I have reD, this is a common theme however the reaponses online have been that google are working on it. This has been the case for about 2 or 3 yrs so dont expect a solution anytime soon, even with updated firmware.

What i have learnt in the last week, applies to PPPOE Lan set ups only with my ISP plan being 50/20..

Change your wan settings to custom, and enter the google preferred codes of 8 8 8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as these are more stable.

Do not have any spaces or special characters in your your wifi network name or password. Dont ask me why but that is what tech support stated.

If you can get a DHCP connection through your ISP...DO IT!!!!

If you are connected to an NBN box becausr you have FTTP, change out the google Ethernet cable for a non google one.

Do a laptop test utilising your Ethernet cable directly to the NBN box. Utilise speedtest.net as it is the site/app that google and a lot of ISPs use and you can just give them the ID code and they can see the result for themselves.

When you connect your laptop, you will have to create a broadband network so do not lose your isp deets.

Lastly, once I established that i was getting my speeds on my laptop, I reconnected my wifi network and the ISP reset my connection at the same time. For some reason this shocked everything into working mode and for the first time in 8myhs, I have been getting the speeds I have been paying for. Saying that, I had to reset the router after 24hrs because as I have suspected from the start, the router gets a cache and slows it right back down again.

This may not solve it for you but after 8mths and several tanties, I will settle for steady wifi for 24hrs. Would never get mesh again but have learnt alot of interesting things along the way and have a wealth of respect for anyone working in IT.

*update*

Adter all the above character building exercises  I contacted my isp upon advice from google tech support and asked them to disable vlan tagging.

They didnt, but this request prompted them to reset the nbn network at the same time as my nbn power cycled and surprisingly i started getting the upload speeds that i pay for.

Has been a few weeks now and the problem appears to have resolved...until peak hour when the chrome cast continues to buffer or kick me out but it has definetly improved.

I have also reconnected my wifi mini speaker but had to factory reset it for it to be recognised on my wifi network.

So I am visiting family for the holidays and this is destroying me for both downloads and uploads. The Google Nest Wifi Mesh with 2 mesh APs says it has 1G up and 1G down. But whenever I try to download large files it throttles it to 3-4Mb and then when I try to upload something it throttles it to 0.5Mb. It's absolutely horrendous, but I can solve the issue easily. I just connect to my VPN server (NordVPN) and it downloads the same file at 34Mb and uploads are just as fast if not faster. I feel sorry for my relatives that have this crappy system. Wish they would have gone with an ASUS mesh router instead. So dumb.

Hey ianathompson,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Mel
