Slow wifi

drkerby
Community Member

I have a 3 point Google Nest system giving me issues. I have a 1 Gig setup from my ISP and the Google app shows me consistently pulling over 800Mbps and the ISP confirms that. We regularly have issues in the house battling over wifi though. I'll be watching tv and then it will start buffering, or my son's computer games downstairs will start lagging while our stream is great. When I test connectivity, all the devices are great and even can have amazing speeds- so I know that it is not the setup. The prioritize device trick works great... for one of the devices. The others then begin to lag if we do that.

What is strange is when I run it through the google app it will tell me that the laptop is capable of pulling 300Mbps, and yet here I sit watching it download files at 7Mbps. It feels like the router is throttling the speed of devices on purpose. So one of them is always working amazing... yet we have 30 (lights, googles, cell phones, etc.). It is incredibly frustrating to have so much bandwidth available and yet watch even the 'working device' only pulling 30Mbps and everything else is pulling nearly nothing and still the one device isn't working.

That worked! I unplugged all my google speakers and it immediately started working. I plugged them in one by one to see which one was the issue, but after they were all plugged in it still was working great! I think I just needed to reset one of the speakers!

I have massive downloads happening on Xbox, laptop, desktop, while streaming a 4K avengers movie!!!!! I am so happy!

Had the same problems.  Could be the computer games.   I was told by my isp that it’s the gammers taking up your bandwidth.   Sorry to say.

My point is that none of the devices take up the bandwidth. They are hovering around 30Mbps and everything else is less than 1. Yet the devices are capable of 300Mbps. The Speedtest shows that and the google app confirms similar numbers. It’s almost as if the network is evenly dividing up the bandwidth between all my devices until it is almost nothing but will stop doing so for a Speedtest or if I prioritize one device.

I'd try removing all of your points and adding them back 1 by 1 and doing a speed test inbetween each. I just found out that a point we bought was wrecking havoc on our speed. Unfortunately for me Google won't refund their faulty device but maybe it will at least help you troubleshoot. My point was making our network crawl and I didn't realize it until by accident. Good luck!

So your saying googles cameras make the Wi-Fi slow?

No, i'm saying one of his Nest "points" may be doing it. He said he has a 3. It's worth a shot.

He points I’m confused at what your talking about.

Hey, drkerby.

Thanks for coming back and letting us know that olbedhead's solution worked for you. I'm happy to hear that everything is working well. Hopefully anybody else having the same problem can learn from that and get things working too. Before I mark this as resolved, I just wanted to make sure that you were all set or to see if you needed anything else. If you need anything more, just let me know.

Thanks.

Feel like I have to chime in here.
This seems to have fixed the issue for me, too.
Very pleased not having to return my Nest to the store. I'm now getting wireless around 300 mbit down/up on my 500/500 fiber.

UPDATE: Oh well..... I'm back down at 80 mbit. Investigating if I have a faulty point.

Hey, MaxMe.

Sorry to hear that you're having speed issues. I do have a couple of questions for you.

  • Is your low speed constant, or is it happening at random?
  • How many points do you have on your network?
  • Have you run any mesh tests? If so, what is the strength of your points as reported?

If you can give me a little more to start with, I think we can figure out what's going on in your situation. Thanks.

Hi Jeff.

  • Up until now speed has been capped at around 100 mbit, often 60 to 80 mbit. Today, after unplugging my two points and following the steps in this thread, I'm getting around 350 mbit in close proximity to the Nest router.
  • Mesh tests come back with "great" connections. Doesn't seem to be any issue there
  • My own theory is, the Nest system has a tendency to use 2.4 ghz Wifi 4...

Your help is much appreciated!

EDIT: I don't understand this. How can the device reach speeds in the test, higher than the point it's connected to?

Thanks for checking on that and providing that info, MaxMe.

The 5GHz vs. 2.4GHz theory is a good thought. You can see in the WiFi settings if devices are connected to the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, but even at 2.4GHz, the speed disparity is larger than it should be. Also, if you're generally seeing great connections to your points, you should be fine to be under 5GHz coverage.

With all the reports coming on this, we do have internal teams looking deeper into the issue, and I'm hoping to hear news soon on a possible fix. I'll update the thread as I know more.

Thanks.

Hey, everyone.
Just as an update, we're still looking into this issue and as of yet we don't have a solution. I just wanted to touch base so you would know that you haven't been forgotten. In the meantime if anything else changes about your situation, please feel free to update us in the thread.
Thanks!

Hi @Jeff

I am having similar issues described in this thread.  ISP has 1GB speeds, and Google Home sees about 850Mbs. I can see 450Mbs with my Samsung phone within close proximity of the Google router connected to the modem. But, from any other Google points I'm only getting 120Mbs on average from phone or computer.

Based on your comment, I would like to receive feedback when an update is available.  I this thread notify me or do I need to keep checking it?

Hi, define1.

For any updates to the thread, you can set it to notify you of new replies by subscribing to the thread or you can check back for updates. If the update is addressed through an app or hardware update, you will receive that automatically.

Thanks.

Hey again, define1.

There's a new firmware version that is starting to roll out now. You won't need to do anything in order to receive it, your network devices will download and install the update automatically. It's just starting to push out now, so it could still be a a little wait before it hits, but hopefully that update ends up being the fix to your issues. If you get that update and nothing changes, please let me know.

Thanks.

what is the firmware number of this version? I would like to know if I have received it. I'm still having the same issue and its 9th of April

For the record - mine is 13729.57.27

Based on my internet search this firmware version has been out for months so clearly I haven't received the updated firmware. For those that have been lucky enough to get the newer firmware update  -has it fixed this issue?

The issue was the same after I did a factory reset and was only running off the main router (and no points). I do have like 8 google speakers throughout the house. I think I will try unplugging them to see if this approach works with those.

Thought I’d join the fun.  I’ve been dealing with these slow speeds for many months.  Have 5 points and good or great connections when you do the test.  I should have 600 Mbps down and 30 up.  Google test shows those speeds.  Every day when I get home from work I have about 20 Mbps down and about 15 up.  I do a reboot and it fixes things for a short time and then goes back down relatively quickly.  Never get the 600 Mbps even next to the primary node.  I always thought it would be great to have the Nest WiFi as part of the ecosystem as I have a nest hub in nearly every room.  I’ve been super tempted to just cut my losses and go with a new WiFi system so I can enjoy the speed I’m paying for.  After so much time it doesn’t appear there will be a solution to this issue. I have to assume it is a hardware issue as a software update would have come through by now.  A bit of a bummer deal.

Thought I’d provide a quick update.  I officially ended my relationship with the Nest WiFi and replaced it with the TP-Link Deco AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Mesh System. Two nodes solved all my issues. There is definitely something wrong with the Nest WiFi system. I’ve had no issue, no…not one with this new mesh system. Just cut your losses and get a new system. It is amazing having WiFi that works consistently.

I have been having the same issue. With Wifi 6 fairly affordable I have been considering abandoning Google mesh and trying a different brand that pushes out fixes. This has been happening for maybe a year at least many months with no change. 1 GB ISP speeds, getting 750-800 ish at the primary Google puck and wifi is 150-300 Mbps on almost any device including new Pixel 6 pro. This hurts my WFH as well even though laptop is hardwired!

My Google wifi recently started having slow speed too.  It's been working fine all along.  now I have to reboot daily by unplugging the power and plugging it back.  The wifi would be crawling at ~1Mbps after one day of usage.   After reboot, the speed is back to 200-300 Mbps.  This is very frustrating, what/how can I fix this?

Hey playground,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Hey playground,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Thanks,
Mel
