Smart or stupid to change FiOS router from Quantum Gateway to CR1000a if I'm using Nest? And how?

Hi community!

I've been using the Verizon FiOS Quantum Gateway router + Nest wifi pods for years with relatively smooth success. I am paying for gigabit services, and my speeds routinely hover around 800 mbps for both download and upload. However, I did have to do something super quirky with the Gateway admin portal and bridging my Nest/Gateway to get to this point (and have no clue how I'd do it again today if I had to).

I recently cut the cord, so Verizon sent me their newer CR1000a router. I'm wondering if I should just keep my setup as is and have two questions for this community:

1) When trying to bypass the Gateway router and just plugging the ethernet cord directly into my Nest wifi router last night, my speeds dropped to 80 download/80 upload. From what I've read in forums, this seems normal and I'm guessing is a way for Verizon to make you use their stuff. Is that right?

2) If you think I'd gain performance by shifting routers to the CR1000a, do you have instructions as to how one sets up a similar bridge setup as I currently have? I can't find anything reliable online and, of course, Verizon does not answer this question publicly when its customers ask for this type of help

Thinking I'll just return the new router, but I'd love this community's help! Y'all are great.

Thank you!

Hi Varyattractive,

We understand your situation and the complexities of dealing with Verizon's equipment. Let's analyze your questions and explore potential solutions:

1. Speed Drop when Bypassing Verizon Gateway:

Yes, it's normal for your internet speeds to drop significantly when you plug your Nest Wifi router directly into Verizon's CR1000a without configuring it in bridge mode. This is because Verizon often restricts full gigabit speeds to devices connected directly to their equipment. Bypassing their router triggers various limitations, resulting in the drastic speed reduction you observed.

2. Potential Performance Gains with CR1000a:

While your current setup with the bridge configuration on the Quantum Gateway might be working, the newer CR1000a router could potentially offer better performance:

  • Newer Technology: The CR1000a might have updated hardware and software, potentially providing faster processing and improved Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Mesh Wi-Fi Integration: If you haven't fully utilized the mesh features of your Nest Wifi pods, integrating them with the CR1000a's mesh capabilities could offer seamless whole-home coverage.

3. Bridge Mode Setup  on CR1000a:

Bear in mind, setting up bridge mode on Verizon routers can be tricky and often lacks clear official instructions. However, here are some general directions to get you started:

  • Access router admin panel: Open a web browser and enter the CR1000a's IP address (usually 192.168.1.1). Log in with your Verizon admin credentials.
  • Locate Bridge Mode settings: The menu options might vary slightly depending on the CR1000a firmware version. Look for terms like "DMZ Mode," "Bridge Mode," or "Passthrough Mode" under advanced settings or networking configurations.
  • Enable Bridge Mode: Select the Bridge Mode option and follow the on-screen instructions. This might involve disabling DHCP and firewall functionalities on the CR1000a.
  • Connect your Nest Wifi router: Once Bridge Mode is enabled, connect your Nest Wifi router's WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the CR1000a using an Ethernet cable.
  • Configure your Nest Wifi router: Set up your Nest Wifi router according to its own instructions. You might need to adjust DHCP settings to avoid conflicts with the CR1000a's Bridge Mode operation.

Important Notes:

  • Proceed with caution: Bridge Mode configurations can disrupt your internet connection if not done correctly. Ensure you have good understanding of networking concepts before proceeding.
  • Contact Verizon Support: If you're unsure about any steps or encounter difficulties, consider contacting Verizon's technical support for specific guidance on enabling Bridge Mode on the CR1000a.

Recommendation:

  • Try the Bridge Mode setup if you're comfortable with networking and want to potentially unlock the CR1000a's performance. Remember, if things go wrong, contacting Verizon support might be necessary.
  • If Bridge Mode feels overwhelming or your current setup provides sufficient performance, you can stick with the existing configuration using the Quantum Gateway bridge.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your comfort level, technical expertise, and desired performance improvements.

I hope this information helps you understand your options and make an informed decision about your FiOS setup. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions!

Best regards,

Dan
