Using Nest Wifi Pro as a router replacement

EBTPA
Community Member

UseCase:

I do not have a modem supplied by my ISP.  I have my own nighthawk router that I would like to replace with NestWifi Pro. (my ISP presents a ethernet connection and not coax and I am allowed to bring my own router)

NestWifi Pro would be getting the DHCP address from my ISP directly.

Issue:

How can I set it up if I am not connected to the internet as I am replacing my nighthawk router??

Your ISP will likely have instructions for modems its supplies and modems that are supplied by a third party. The Nest WiFi Pro can the option to use PPPoE, DHCP , a static address for its 'WAN' interface. You may also need to add a VLAN tag (802.1q tag) to the interface. https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9798157?hl=en  This link suggests using a VLAN capable switch for the task.  Nost basic network vendors (Netgear, TP-Link etc) will be able to provide a cheap fanless Gigabit Ethernet switch that you can :

  1. Create VLAN2
  2. Choose the port going to your ISP kit to be tagged with VLAN2
  3. Choose the interface that is connected to your Nest Wifi Pro router interface as untagged VLAN2

There is talk around google recogniz\sed tags, and a software update - but I have no idea if this is country specific, or even exists.

good luck
