WiFi speed from Great to Terrible due to new wireless HiFi speakers. Help highly appreciated

Hey Community. I've been tearing my hair out and I don't have much to start with 😂 and reaching out for support from Cape Town. Here's my problem: I've purchased a wonderful wireless speaker system (Mission LX Connect - see link below) for my office setup and my WiFi speeds have dropped from 500 Mbps to 15 Mbps!! - see Speedtest.net screenshots below.

I have a good Fibre connection, a 3 piece Nest Wifi set-up with my modem and mesh router on my table. The speakers are on either side of my MacBook and monitor. The LX Connect signal is uncompressed 5.8 GHz. My understanding is that the Nest operates on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with all bands active simultaneously and the bands cannot be split. When connecting to my ZyXEL modem/router (only on 2.4)  WiFi, the signal improves marginally to 50 Mbps, but still a long way off what the fibre connection is capable of. I'm able to change the channels on the ZyXEL but not on the Nest? There seems to be interference, possibly due to the closeness of the 5.8 and 5 GHz bands? Unfortunately I'm a psychologist and my tech skills are not able to solution around this 😂. At least I can provide my own self-help counselling to address my current state of depression!

I believe that the Nest Pro adds another 6 GHz band which may alleviate the current signal conflict, but I'd prefer to have a solution with my current set-up if possible. The sound is amazing, but if this problem persists, I'll need to prioritise my WiFi speed for my business operations and send the speakers back, plunging me in to even  deeper depression 😎 . Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Keith

I've actually heard of this happening with Bose, not this vendor.  The Bose 5Ghz wifi frequencies interrupt the Google Nest Wifi to the determent of overall Wifi experience. I do have a Bose 900 soundbar, but I've fortunately not experienced this issue.  That said, I was talking to someone on reddit and I was dealing with a related but unrelated to Bose issue with mesh.  He asked me if I had Bose and that hi-fi systems can interfere with Google Nest 5Ghz wifi signals. It turned out that this wasn't the issue I experienced, but I did store it in the old brain computer for later reference.

Thanks for the feedback and good to hear that you're not experiencing my challenge. Bose is a great brand. I'll wait to see whether any other comm members respond.

Hi folks,

Keith, thanks for reaching out. Please try changing the placement of your Google Nest Wifi devices. Move it away from your LX Connect Wireless Speaker System so it will not interfere with the signal. Check out this link for more information.

I appreciate your assistance, @olavrb and @hmstanley.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,
Lovely

Hi Lovely, thanks also for the “sound” advice 😀. I’ll try and extend the Lan cable connection between the Modem and Nest base station to place it further away from my LX speakers as suggested. Let me know your thoughts also on whether the Nest Pro system that has a 6 GHz channel would be able to circumvent the Mission LX Connect 5 GHz signal?

Have a great weekend! Best Keith

Hi Keith,

Sorry for the delayed response. Even if your Google Nest Wifi Pro has 6 GHz, your Mission LX Connect can still interfere with it since the latter is a tri-band router. It doesn't operate solely at 6 GHz. Check out this article about wireless interference.

If you have other questions, let me know.

Sincerely,
Lovely

Linus Tech Tips had similar problems with Sony, some nice troubleshooting info in this one:

I'd ask the audio equipment producer if it's possible to change channel/frequencies, or limit the channel width, for the wireless communication. Or go wired speakers. Or try something else than Nest Wifi to see how it behaves.

I don't work for Google.

Wow, olavb thanks for sending me the Linus Tech Tip link diving deep into similar problems he’d been having with a Sony wireless base station. Sounds very similar to my challenges with the Mission LX Connects. I’ve reached out to the Mission Team to see if they have a plan to limit the channel width or change the channel/frequencies. I’ll let you know if I have any success. I wonder if the Nest Pro Wi-Fi which extends to 6 GHz would make a difference? I appreciate the solutioning support!! Best Keith
