WiFi speeds significantly slower than direct connect (150/100 vs 900/900)

I have a 1 Gig Fiber connection and when direct connected to the NEST Mesh router, I get the correct speeds (800-900 up/down) but when connect via wireless I get 1/8th of that speed.  I have tried factory resetting, added and removed bridge mode, ensured IPv6 is disabled and changed DNS to Google DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4).

When I first got the fiber service in October of '23, the wifi showed much higher speeds (600-700Mbps up/down) but now it is limping along.

What gives?

Same with my Google WiFi. The incoming speed is correct but WiFi is slow and is now dropping out multiple times a day

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry to hear that you're going through this with your Nest router. Let's work together to figure out the issue you're experiencing. To help with that, I have a few questions for you:

  • Are all your wireless devices affected, or just a specific one?
  • How many devices are typically connected to your Wi-Fi network?
  • Have you tried relocating your Nest Wifi point for better signal strength?
  • Have you performed a speed test directly connected to your modem? If so, what speeds did you get?

In the meantime, you can find additional troubleshooting steps in this article: Troubleshoot slow Wi-Fi

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to help further.

Regards,

Jonathan

Below are the answers to your questions:

  • Are all your wireless devices affected, or just a specific one?
    • All devices affected
  • How many devices are typically connected to your Wi-Fi network?
    • connected there are up to 6-7 devices.  I have disconnected all others and retested the service and it still shows 100Mbps
  • Have you tried relocating your Nest Wifi point for better signal strength?
    • It's literally 4 feet from me and right next to the fiber NID.
  • Have you performed a speed test directly connected to your modem? If so, what speeds did you get?
    • Cannot easily connect directly to Fiber NID.  It is MAC bound to my router.  But by connecting directly to the router via ethernet cable I get 800/900Mbps up/down

Hi @Aseoph,

Thanks for replying and providing the information. Let's see if we can improve your Wi-Fi speeds.

  • Interference: Microwaves and Bluetooth devices can sometimes interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Try turning them off temporarily and see if your speed improves.
  • Cable Connections: Double-check that both the LAN and WAN cables are securely plugged into their respective ports on your Nest Wifi router and modem.
  • How many Nest Wifi points do you have in your home? If you have multiple points, ensure they're within optimal range of each other for a strong mesh network.
  • Restarting Nest Wifi Points: Try disconnecting your Nest Wifi points for a few seconds and then reconnecting them. This can sometimes help improve performance.

Let me know how it goes after trying these steps. I'm happy to assist further if needed.

Cheers,

Jonathan
