Wired / Wireless Upload speeds capped at 100mbps? ATT Fiber

sliderkb2
Community Member

I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂

For reference the setup is

ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi

Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.

I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

Hi, JoeSchmo9000.

Sorry to hear about the speed issues you're having. This is actually a known issue, and I'm going to merge your thread into one that we have where all the main discussion on the matter is taking place. Please feel free to follow that for updates and look for more information on the matter there.

Thanks.

when are you even going to provide a solution rather than just merging the threads?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

Just bought the new Google nest wifi mesh router and 2 points in July 2021  We have spectrum internet. We pay for 100Mbps.

Does anyone else have issues with constant internet connection lost notification from the home app. It's literally almost every day we lose internet. When I check the modem either when home or out and about on the app. It appears to always have internet coming in. But the home app shows that we lost wifi. Leading us to a router issue. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. The only way to fix it is I am able to reset the modem from my phone and it will resolve, or if we are home to reset it at the modem.

Hi, Steve3773.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your WiFi connection. I imagine that's confusing and frustrating to deal with. Let's see how we can get this worked out for you.

I do have a few questions that should help us sort out what's going on.

  • When you are getting a network outage, are you seeing any status lights on your points or router? If so, what color are they?
  • During the outage, is it your entire network, or is it limited to the points?
  • How is your router set up to your modem?
  • Do you have any other WiFi networks running alongside the Nest WiFi, such as from your ISP's modem?

If you could give me a little more info, we can definitely figure out what's wrong. I look forward to hearing back from you and working this out.

Thanks.

I typically am not home. My Google home app notifies me.  The outages are very random. When I check the home app, it is sometimes the router only, router and 1 point, both points and not the router. It is just so random. If I reset the modem from the IP app, it solves the issue about every time.

Our router is hooked via a coax cable.

No. I only have the Google mesh with router and 2 points

Hey, Steve3773.

This issue has continued to grow and we have a thread that has the ongoing discussion. I'm going to merge this thread into that one and it will make it easier for you to keep an eye on updates and see what others are doing in the same situation.

Hello Jeff. I have been having the identical problem with my Google wifi and Nest wifi for months. I use an Ethernet backhaul for multiple pucks to ensure the strongest signal to most of them that I can. I have tested the system many times and with a hardwired connection on Xfinity I get over 900 down and almost 40 up. However, the wifi at times will randomly plummet to single digits or even have some devices stop and reconnect.

I have followed the original thread and was hoping for a solution. Is there a firmware update or something to correct this. I had opened tickets in the past with no real help. Same steps as usual. I run in bridge mode. All wires are new. New modem, etc. Restarting system often helps but it is very inconvenient doing this nearly everyday.

Can you direct me to this new thread.

Sincerely

Eric

Hey, Steve3773.

Thanks for following up and letting me know a bit more about your setup. There is currently a bug going around that is causing some of these issues, and it appears that you might be affected. We're working on a solution now, and I'll pass your experience along to our internal teams.

Additionally, you could submit your feedback from your device and it will go directly to our internal teams as well. They will be able to use your device feedback to more quickly diagnose the issues. The process for doing so is below.

Step 1. Turn on device reports

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Select the device you want to share feedback about.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings   Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Step 2. Share your feedback

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap Feedback and then tap the type of device you'd like to submit feedback for.
  4. To display available emails, in the "From:" section, tap the arrow on the right. Select your email address.
  5. In the feedback summary, write a brief description of your issue.
  6. Be sure to check the box for Screenshot and System logs.
  7. To submit feedback, at the top right corner, tap Send .

I will keep the community updated on this issue as more information comes out. Thanks for your input on this and for your patience.

Feeling quite frustrated with my nest mesh. We have 1 gig fiber lines. Nest is connected directly to the fiber (no modem to get in the way). Nest records 950 mbs from fiber. When plugged into ethernet I get 950mbs. When using Nest Wifi, standing right next to the main device, I get 350mbs max on any device from my new gaming pc to a new apple tablet to my cell phone. It gets worse. Using any of the 4 mesh nests located in the house I will get between 60mbs and 130 mbs standing right next to them.

-mesh test shows great connectivity on all nest devices. 4 nests on 2 story 3k sqft house. They are plenty close together

-only using 2 or 3 devices at a time so it's not loaded down

- i have reset the network, reset the nests completely, unplugged, turned off etc.

I'm having the same issues.  When I'm close to the mesh pod near my internet connection, I get download speeds of 400mbps.  when I move to the other mesh pods, the speeds drop to 150m. or even down to 60m.  I'm paying for 1,200mbps internet speed from xfinity.  When I test speed on the Google Home app it shows download speed from Xfinity of 800mbps.  I have 5 pods in a 3 story, 3,500 sq ft house.  The mesh network does not seem to be pushing the speed throughout all of the pods.

Same issue.  The Nest Wifi router gets routinely 890 MB D/L (Comcast), then next Nest Point (within 25 feet) gets 140 MB D/L, then Nest Point on the second floor, almost directly above is at 100 MB D/L and the fourth point, 25 feet away from the two points gets 104 MB D/L.  Just retested on the new firmware and same issue remains.

Hey, all.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your speeds. This is something that we're actually looking into internally and we have another thread where others who are affected are discussing this. I'm going to move your posts into that discussion so you can stay up to date with what's happening and follow along.

Thanks.

Hey, Ciaran6410.

I am still waiting to hear more. I know it's frustrating being caught in the same boat with everyone else experiencing this issue. Until I know more, I'll keep an eye on things here.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff

Can you honestly answer the following questions:-

Is this issue actively being looked into?

when is the estimated resolution time?

This issue now exists for over 6 months and is increasingly frustrating

Jeff,

Any update?

Hi,

I'm having the same issue. Goggle Home app speed test report less than 100MB/s connection speed for my device but, if I set it as a priority device, the same test goes up to 400MB/s. Is there any active reported issue somewhere that I can follow about this problem? Is someone looking at it?

Seemingly same issue here. Replying to be able to track this.

Almost every night some devices (but not all?) slow to a crawl of 2 or 3 Mbps, while wired we get 400. Reconnecting does nothing. The only resolution is restarting the main Nest puck and then all speeds jump back up to top speed. Didn't used to have this problem on my old Google Wifi.

Maybe this is why Target has them on sale now, the router + a hotspot for $189, $30 off

crazy how Google continues to promote these duds. I switched all mine out for ASUS Zen 6600 which now gives me 950/950 wired and 600/500 WiFi from my 1G/1G ATT Fiber

https://www.target.com/p/google-nest-mesh-wifi-router-and-point-2-pack/-/A-76387371

Oops, 30% off, save $80

Thanks for the advice, I will return it and looking for something that works.

I wish I could replace mine but had the original Google mesh with the 3 picks since 2020 😞

I had the Nest with 3 access points and just gave up and bought a new asus router with a access point. I decided to just eat the expense of what I paid for the google system and our house internet is so much better now....actually getting the 1 Gbps speed that we have been paying for....for years.

Since the 11th August I've been experiencing slow download speeds. I currently have a 100/20 plan but have been getting a max of 20/20 for the last couple of days. Have restarted everything and then I've contacted my ISP.

The connection is NBN router> Nest Wifi and has been unchanged for the last 8 months with no issue.

My ISP got me to check and I'm getting 100mbps (checked through ethernet) to the NBN router but it's somehow being throttled back to 20 or less when it hits the Google nest wifi.

Any thoughts or help with a fix would be awesome.

I have the same problem. Have 250 GB fiber plan, getting around 19 down, 5 up. I get full speed plugged directly into the ONT and through my several year old Netgear Nighthawk. Problem started on Google Wifi pucks. Had some other issues with them and thought they were going back so upgraded to the Google Nest Wifi. They have the same problem.

Hey, everyone.

Sorry for the issues you're having with inconsistent speeds across your network. I know it's as frustrating experience to have an unreliable state with this stuff. What we're seeing, however, appears to be connected to a known issue and we're working on it now internally. I'm hoping that I'll be able to have more news about it soon, but it's on our radar and we're working on a fix now.

Thanks for sharing your setups and what you're working with. It definitely helps us sort things out more quickly. I'll update as I have more info to share.

I’m replying so that I will see the response when it gets worked out. I just purchased Google Nest Router and my download speed is less than normal - upload is normal. Was researching to see if I needed change a setting.

Same with me. 250+ mbps direct from modem, 10 mbps from nest router.

Hi, Lands1992.

Thanks for joining in on the conversation. I'm sorry you're experiencing issues as well. One thing that everyone could do to help us better understand the issue is to send feedback. The feedback does reach our internal teams directly and you can make use of the message function to briefly explain your issue. The process for sending feedback is found here: https://bit.ly/3agoYXR

Again, thanks for being patient while we work on this.

I have the same problem. My plan is 500Mbps, but I use Nest Wifi that it just gives me 5Mbps... I use my old wifi router again, it brings me 280Mbps.  When could it be fixed?

Hi, Chaos.

Thanks for chiming in with your experience, and I'm sorry you're having issues as well. This thread, as well as a few others with the same reports are being followed internally. We'll keep an eye on things and update the community as we know more. I'm sorry I don't have more to share right now, but again, thanks for letting us know how you were affected to.
In the meantime, you can use the send feedback function in the Home app to also contact our internal teams directly. Each report helps us diagnose the issue. Here's how to send feedback.

Jumping on this thread because I have the same issue. I have 4 pucks iny house. Myain one is connected to a FIOS gigabit router with the supplied Google cable and get 950 up and down from the provider. But all devices connected are capped at 90 to 100 mbs.  Very frustrating. And the connection also drops often.  Horrible for working at home and having to wait for your connection to catch up during a meeting.

Just for your situational awareness. There is another thread on this issue that I have also posted on here.

I show some results from speed tests that I have run..

I have the same issue. I live in the country and only get 6 mbps from a local cable company. Plugged directly into their modem I get the 60 mbps. Out of the Nest I get 16 mbps. Obviously, I need as much of the 60 mbps I can get. Thanks

Jumping on this thread since I have the same issue. My plan is 400Mbps which is what I get directly at the Modem/Router (FRITZ!Box 6490 Cable from Vodafone, Germany). I have a few rooms were the Wifi signal from my Router is weak so I decided to buy Google Wifi and use that across the apartment and ignore/turn-off the Wifi from my Modem/Router. Setting up was easy but I get no more than 80Mbps using Google Wifi. Cables are all fine, I used the cable that comes with Google Wifi but also others I know for sure do work. Plugging a LAN cable into the Google Wifi Router is also showing 80Mbps, so no wonder Wifi can't do more. Any solution in sight? I am not sure if should wait for a fix as I see many start having this issue now or return the hardware to the Google Shop. Thanks for any updates on this!
