google wifi error occured during mesh test

Hi I have my main router connected to a switch. From the switch hard wired in first google wifi point, and from google wifi point 1 hard wired to google wifi point 2 and subsequent hard wire from google wifi point 2 to switch.

a couple of days ago i did a reset as i changed layout of network.

all set up went fine until yesterday including a mesh test where the connection was very good.

Now the mesh test fails. 

Restarted and reinstalled with out connecting the 2nd switch after fulling installing.

Still mesh test errors.

I saw an other topic like this so i will answer the questions in bold:

I do have a few questions about the points that might help us figure out what is happening.

  • Were you able to complete setup of the points after the reset?
  • YES but Mesh test failed
  • Do the points or router have any status lights beyond the standard white showing?
  • NO
  • When the two points stopped working, were they invisible to the overall network, or did they just not allow connections?
  • Both google wifi point are online and visible but wifi speed test is not good on the 2nd wifi point 

2nd question, My wifi network gave a warning notification that a 2nd dhcp router was detected.

What do i need to do on this?

Having the exact same issues, including the 2nd DHCP router message.

i was having issues with mesh testing my 3 extenders

 

id read all the post about powering off and factory reset etc. none of which worked for me. 

I then found this simple and easy fix. 

go to google home app

click wifi

then click network

the top middle click points. 
 
You should see you extender points all with green lights. If you see any with red lights this is the issue. Mine said I had 6. So I deleted the 3 red ones and bingo. 

mesh test works perfectly

Hi Jeff,

 

I am not trying to jump in front of hificork, but if he doesn't respond, I'd like help with this issue.  I am still experiencing the same thing.  

To be honest the google network was interfering with my sky wifi network. I was told to fix this i had to change settings on my main router which has security implications. So as a result I decided to remove the google wifi mesh.

Hi, DunnMark. 

This thread will stay open until we find some resolution for what's happening where with everyone. A lot of threads that don't see any activity will be closed over time to make sure that newer and more relevant threads get proper attention. This one will stay open as it's a known issue being worked on internally.

I have a mixed network. The main device is a Nest WiFi router base and the there is one Nest WiFi point. There are four Google WiFi devices. The WiFi mesh works OK. However, using Google Home, when I run a mesh test, after the test seems to start I get the message "Error occurred during Mesh test". "try again" is unsuccessful with the same error message. When I run a speed test, I get the message "Speed test failed".  I cannot change any settings at the "primary network" level. When I press on the gear wheel, I just get a changing colour part rotating wheel.

I have 30 devices connected to the network. I cannot tell if the access points have been updated as this is not available. If I go from the gear wheel on the first page to settings to Nest WiFi, I also get a wheel of death.

Hi, Rob2037.

Thanks for the added details. Have you tried resetting your cloud services connection? It's worth a shot with your symptoms. Here's the process for that.

Open the Google Home app.

  1. Tap the WiFi icon.

  2. Tap Settings.

  3. Select Privacy settings.

  4. Toggle Nest WiFi cloud services OFF and wait for 30 seconds, then back ON.

Once done, close the Home app and perform a full network restart to ensure that the new settings are in place. To do this, I would recommend doing a power cycle on your network.

  1. Disconnect the power adapter and the Ethernet cable from the Nest WiFi router.

  2. Disconnect the power adapter from the Nest WiFi points.

  3. Disconnect the power adapter from the modem. Allow all devices to stay disconnected from the power for 5 minutes.

  4. Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully back up. All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.

  5. After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable back to Nest WiFi router's WAN port (globe symbol port).

  6. Connect the power back to the Nest WiFi router and to the Nest WiFi points. Wait until they're all fully back on.

If that doesn't work for you, please let me know and we'll keep looking at options.

This is where the app is most frustrating.  I cannot change any settings at the "primary network" level. I can open the Google Home app. I can tap on the WiFi icon. However, when I tap on the gear wheel, I just get a changing colour part rotating wheel. If I go from the settings gear wheel on the first page to settings to Nest WiFi, I also get a wheel of death.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Home onto my iPhone 12. I have the latest version of iOS.

I'll perform the full network restrat in spite of this issue and let you know the results.

Same for me Jeff. No access to settings (used to work). Any luck with the full network restart @Rob2037 ?

The full network restart in the way that @Jeff suggested did not change things for me. However, I did the following and I now have full functionality:

  1. I did a factory reset of one of the Google WiFi devices.
  2. Google Home then prompted me to remove each for the devices in turn as I had performed a factory reset.
  3. I removed the Google WiFi devices first, then the Nest WiFI point followed by the Nest WiFi router.
  4. I then added the Nest WiFi router as a new device.
  5. In turn, I added the Nest WiFI point followed by each of the four Google WiFI devices. This was the tedious bit where each added device required QR code access.
  6. About 50 minutes later, Google Home happily runs mesh tests and allows me access to home screen settings

I think that this means that Google Home was confused by the mix of Nest and Google devices at some point. However, it does not now. I'd have to say that the Google WiFi app never required this level of intervention.

Thanks both ofr your encouragement. @DunnMark, I think that this is a solution. It's just a shame that it's such a "belt and braces" approach to something that should be controllable from the Google Home app.

I don't have a mix of devices on my network, just three Google WiFi mesh devices (one router and two additional WiFi points), so I'm hoping the Factory Reset will work for me. I wouldn't touch it if I hadn't also lost the ability to prioritize devices, so will try it and report back...

So, I’ve got mine working too @Rob2037 and @Jeff. I powered down my ISP gateway and all (3) Google Wifi mesh devices. Then powered the gateway back up, waited, then the Google Wifi point that is connected to that (“router”). Then did a network restart (as that option was available again!), then powered back up the other two Google Wifi device points. Ran a mesh test, and a speed test, and both work!

My network was all fine (since about 2-3yrs), but I wanted to change the SSID on my Google mesh. I installed Google Home on my iOS phone. It recognized my mesh devices, but it said everything was offline (even though everything appeared to be working fine -- laptops, TVs, home automation). The app kept displaying an error when I would try to view things or change settings. What finally got things working is what you did -- a full reset of everything. I powered down the cable modem, and the Google mesh devices. I powered up the cable modem, waited 5 minutes, powered up the main Google mesh device, waited 1 minute, then powered up the remote Google mesh devices. Now all is fine, and I can control my mesh from the Google Home app. (No factory reset required.)

Thanks for these steps. My mesh kept getting error messages. This solved the issue. Now for another topic if you don’t mind. Is there an way to remove devices from wifi list on this nest wifi system

@Jeff I think that @DunnMark and I are sorted. @hificork has moved to a different solution. I'm not sure if @cjones1290 has found a solution yet.

 

Hi Jeff and All,

Thank you for checking.  I factory reset everything and started from scratch.  I was then able to do a mesh test with success.  However, at times, the mesh test will still not work but if I "reset network" (not factory reset), sometimes I can get a mesh test to work. 

When it does work, the mesh test shows some of my points have a weak connection.  The odd part is that some of the points farthest away show Great Connection, while some closer to another point shows Weak Connection. 

Do I have too many points?  I am running three routers and two points.  I run the routers vs the points to expand the range for my wifi.

Hey, cjones.

You might be running too many points and your devices are confused a bit about which point to connect to, or they might be causing a bit of interference with one another.  I would suggest removing one point and spacing them out evenly once more and then test. Repeat the process of removing another and spacing them once more and test again. Compare those tests and see if you notice any changes for the better. If things stay the same, let me know and we can look at other possible causes.

Thanks, Jeff.  Would you recommend I take out the points and try running the routers only (as points)?  

@cjones1290 @Jeff I think that each of @DunnMark and I had only one router. I have five points of which 4 are Google Wifi routers (as points) and one is a Nest WiFi. They are all meshed with each other and a Nest Wifi router. That is, I cover a rasonable area but as a mesh, rather than a mix of mesh and extensions. My experience was that starting from a single router and building out the mesh, both initially and after the reset that I set out above worked well.

Thanks @Rob2037 .  I will try to remove the other routers and give it a shot.  I had researched and found that using routers gave faster and a wider range of coverage.  Same as Jeff, I was needing coverage in my back yard and garage areas.  But, if to many routers are causing issues, I am happy to remove them from my mesh to see if it helps.  Thanks for the responses and advice.

I have done the same as Rob2037, personally.

I have a Nest/Google WiFi mixed setup. I started out with Google WiFi, and eventually picked up a Nest router and point combo. When setting that up, I started fresh with the Nest router and point, and then added the Google WiFi points in one by one until I had the coverage I needed. I ended up having one extra point, but my coverage was already solid, so I left it out (too much overlap is bad). Eventually I added the router in at the extreme edges to cover my garage and backyard.

Thanks Jeff.  

I have AT&T fiber (business) running into a Draytec switch. 

  • My main router (setup in NAT standard or Bridged mode) is hardwired into this switch. 
  • My second router (NAT standard or Bridged mode) is hardwired in my living room.
  • My third router (NAT standard or Bridged mod) is wireless in my garage.
  • I have three points throughout the rest of my home (Bedroom, Basement, Kitchen).

 

Mesh test fails and states "Error occurred during Mesh Test.  Please try again.  Try again or not now".  However, to the best of my knowledge, all routers and points are working.  Just as hificork reported, I have received a warning notification that a 2nd dhcp router was detected.

 

Please let me know what other additional information you may need.  Thank you and I hope you and your family has a safe and very Merry Christmas!

I’m having the same problem, and I see there are a number of other threads that have been closed by admins that were never resolved. Not only can I not run a mesh test, but I can’t run a speed test (get error “Speed test failed”) and can’t prioritise devices. All of this used to work. Please help (and please don’t close this thread until there’s a resolution for at least one person….

I am also having a similar issue. On the Google Home app I receive a notification that one of the points is having an issue during a mesh test and the other is not connecting and offline.
