"No compatible devices" error In Digital Wellbeing (Nest WIFI Pro)

Emat3d

After speaking/chatting to 5 google advisors, and many factory resets, uninstalls and reinstalls, the issues of permissions in Digital Wellbeing are unresolved.  I get one of two errors with the different accounts that I have tried:

  • "Only members with permission can edit" - Even though the accounts are listed to have "Full Access".
  • "No compatible devices available" - even though it can connect to the Nest WiFi Pro without issue (and it was advertised to have this feature).

I'm finding it very difficult to find any videos or articles that cover the Digital Wellbeing features in Google Home.  Is this just a feature that just hasn't been implemented?

Hey @Emat3d .

The feature you are wanting to implement is not part of current functionality. It is a feature that is present on most high-end and/or gaming routers but not with the Google Nest line. It has been around for some time as you stated but it isn't something most people will ever use and those abilities are present through more user friendly options like previously mentioned. It is something that can be requested via feedback but it likely will not make an upcoming build unless there is enough interest.

I wish I had better news but that is the reality. Google designed their Wifi line to be powerful, reliable, and simple with the most requested features so it appeals to the largest audience. Configurations like you are wanting to do can be intimidating for most consumers and can push them away from a product as it gives the impression it is complicated to use, especially if they don't have any networking background. It also adds another level of possible vulnerability which negates the security aspect of the line.

Hopefully this answers your question. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Hey @Emat3d .

Digital Wellbeing is for monitoring app usage and not devices and I do not know of any future plans to port device usage into it. Device usage/information is controlled in the Google Home app and not Digital Wellbeing. If you are looking to monitor/control devices connected to your network, you will likely need to set up Family WiFi/Groups. I have linked articles below that provide information on Digital Wellbeing and Family Wifi.

Thank you for your response, Patrick, but I don't think it answered the question of whether the feature is implemented in Google Home.  There's good information on the links you provided, but didn't have information relevant to my query unfortunately.  For context, on the Google store page for the Nest WIFI Pro states: image (3).png

I understand that I can create groups and enable/disable internet access.  There is SafeSearch to block inappropriate content.  But I would like to limit the amount of time my kids spend on apps like TikTok and YouTube.  It appears, those features don't appear to be implemented.  I appreciate the response.  If you have any advice in this regard, I would be very grateful.  Cheers!

Hey @Emat3d .

Thanks for the additional information to clarify what you are wanting to do. Unfortunately, what you are trying to do on the Google Home app is only available on Google Nest and other Assistant enabled devices: Set up Digital Wellbeing

The information and access controls you are wanting is available on Digital Wellbeing on an Android phone. If you have a child, you can manage the same on their devices if the account is linked in Family Link and the device is compatible. The following articles should provide more detail:

As far as porting the full phone functionality into the Google Home app, I don't know of any plans to do so in the near future. You can provide feedback through the Google Home app for that feature request.

I'll reply to the other post in reference to this one.

I'm unable to get the filtering feature to work due to "Only members with permission can edit" error message, even though I'm using the account that setup the Google Home in the first place.  After speaking/chatting with 4 Google advisors, none of which could resolve this issue (One cut our call and closed the case).  I'm wondering if others are having issues with this feature.  So I just wanted to get a sense of whether this feature is being used by others.  The reason I purchase the Google Nest Wifi Pro was to be able to setup devices with their own filtering.

Hey @Emat3d .

As I referenced in your other post (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7506043?hl=en&sjid=15202117538807533705-NA), Digital Wellbeing is for monitoring apps and Google Home for devices. Any device monitoring or control will have to be done through Google Home and/or Family WiFi.

I also replied to your other post.  As you mentioned, device monitoring and control is exactly what I'm looking for in the Google Home app.  Currently, Family Wifi only has options to set up groups and schedule/pause internet access to those groups.  Filtering is a feature I used on my previous router that allowed me to block certain URIs.  This feature seems to be locked behind the Digital Wellbeing category.  I was scouring the internet for more information on this feature (outside of Google documentation).  Even (3rd party) videos that describe the features of Google Home completely skip over it.  Hence why I'm asking if this feature is actually implemented.  If it's not implemented, I'd rather know than hit my head on a wall trying to get it to work.  If you can point to a video of this feature working, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for your response.  I do have a Google Nest (I put it in the subject of my post) as well as the Google Home app on my Google Pixel 7 Pro.

The link seems to imply that Digital Wellbeing is not the feature I'm looking for as I'm trying to filter certain URIs through the router (and preferably to specific devices). Thank you for the link.  It explains why I get the error "No compatible devices", but still doesn't explain why the account used to create the 'Home" doesn't have permissions to set filters.  I also have a few Google Home devices that I'll be adding today to see if these features will work with devices that are applicable.

The bottom line is I'm just looking to filter certain URIs at the router.  It was a feature that I used on my previous router, and I was under the impression that most modern routers would have some sort of firewall config available.  But this seems to be conspicuously absent from a product that costs a premium.   I'm very much hoping that I am wrong here, and the feature does exist and I completely overlooked it.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

One thing to add, regarding the permissions error with the Nest devices in the Google Home app, please refer to the following articles. iOS enables some features by default that interfere with settings/setting up devices.

Troubleshoot setup with iOS

As mentioned before, I'm using a Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Thank you for the honest reply.  Surprisingly I didn't receive this answer from the 5 google advisors that I interacted with.  Instead, it was an endless parade of factory resets, reinstalls, and reboots.  If these features are not available, it might be wise to look at the marketing on the store page:

I suspect I'm not alone in my interpretation of the features available.  "You can block access to certain websites" implies that there's some agency the user has to define them.  Also, the "and more" is also misleading as schedules and pauses are the only functionality implemented.  I would understand using that verbiage for futureproofing... but your response leads me to believe that the goal is to keep the product feature-lite.  In any case, I bought the Nest Wifi Pro under bad assumption at best, and mislead by false marketing at worst.
