unable to import Google Wifi system to google home application

i have 3 google wifi devices that I bought years back. i think I connected it with google wifi application but now that the application is removed, I cannot migrate the wifi system to google home application. (the wifi is working perfectly well, just not connected to the home app)  the "import google wifi network" button does not appear on my side. i think I am the owner in the previous google wifi application, but I am not very sure. what should i do? i need it to connect a google nest point to the current wifi system.

  • I did a factory reset on the google WiFi routers from the Google WiFi app (it will still let you do this although you can’t do anything else until the routers are on google home).  Then I added the google WiFi routers to google home as if they were new.  I used the same wireless name and password so all my devices would reconnect without me having to change anything.   This worked well and only took about 15 minutes in total.    You will lose other settings me like family rules and limits, but that is pretty easy to set back up once you are on google home.

Thank you.  I will give that a shot.   Still seems a bit messy for a technology company like Google to have to go through this.  I do appreciate the assistance.

Hi, Ccohee.

I just wanted to hop in here and follow up real fast. Were you able to have any success getting this set up and migrated after doing the reset as FlyS2C suggested? If you're still struggling to get this sorted, please let me know and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks.

Thank you for replying.

I haven't tried yet due to scheduling conflicts with in the house. Apparently there is a discrepancy in priorities between getting in a mandatory maintenance window, and downtime in the Playstation 5. My user community in my house has appealed to Senior Management (Mom), and I am waiting on a date for the rescheduled change request. I fear that the new maintenance window might be some time out due to Senior Management getting a new Cricut, and sees validity in the User's request.

I am having a hard time redoing all this. Is it now established that the “Migration” workflow does not work? Ironic, huh.

Hah, that all makes perfect sense, Ccohee. When you're ready to move forward with this, let me know and I'll be happy to pick things up from there.

Thanks!

Hey, everyone.
As an update for you all, I wanted to let you know that we have a firmware update coming out now. Some people may have already received the update, but most will see it coming still. Everyone will have it before the end of April. If you receive that update and don't see an improvement in your issues here, please let me know and we can keep looking into things.

Also, if you don't have automatic updates turned on for your Home app, make sure that's turned on as well and that you have the newest version of Home. I imagine by now you should all have the newest version of Home, however. Even so, it's worth checking.
Thanks.

Hey Jeff, need some assistance. All my apps are updated and I still don’t see the import network option. Should proceed with factory resetting the google wifi devices and adding them as new devices on google home?

Amazing... this tread died way back in April til now.  And I'm still facing this issues..  do I assume the above people gave up on Google Home app or they somehow miraculously found a way to migrate their network to the Google Home App?

I can't find my home Google Wifi network on my Google Home app despite trying to add device and tried multiple times.  Also checked with my family members and none of them have ownership of wifi

Melly1288, if I remember correctly, I don’t think the import/migration worked for me. I ended up performing a factory reset (hard pressed the button on the back of the device for 30+ seconds) on one of my google wifi devices and after multiple failed attempts, it somehow, miraculously indeed, popped up as new device on my google home app. The failed attempts were due to the fact that my google wifi device continued to show the red/orange ring after the reset as opposed to the soft blinking blue indicating it’s ready to be paired. It took me a couple factory reset attempts to get to that point. I did make sure the account I was logged in with had ownership to google wifi as well google home app account. It was frustrating, but it eventually worked. Good luck.

Thanks Jimmy for your kind advice I appreciate it.

I'm gonna try later tonight wish me luck! 😉

Hi Jimmy I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my heart your kind advice and yes it works finally! Albeit many attempts and stucked with the final device not responding well only solving it by contacting google help desk chat. I am finally proud to announce my home wifi network has been successfully migrated to my Google Home App!!!

Some key learnings to further share the help after this excruciating experience:

1. Factory reset button needs to be held no less than 10secs.
2. Best is disconnect power unplug. Then hold reset button for 10 secs and switch on power, keep your finger on reset button until u see pulsing blue light. Then release button.
3. if it goes dark after a short while nevermind, just leave it with power plugged in and after 10mins the device will reset.
4. Pulsing blue light is indication they device is ready to be paired.

5. Pulsing green light means no network. Have to reset it again.
6. in order to reset network just factory reset key device connects to your router. No need to reset router.

hope the above helps. 💪💪💪🙌

I just walked through the entire process with Google on the phone throughout and it worked.  Here are some additional notes.  If the original Google WiFi app has a different email address than the Google Home app, it will not automatically migrate for you (that was my problem).  The factory reset is the process that they recommend as well.  However they had me do a very specific sequence which worked flawlessly, as follows:

Before your begin, note your network name and passwords so that they are handy to use for reinstall.

1.  Go to your primary device (connected to your router)

2. Unplug the power

3. Depress the reset button and HOLD it

4. Plug in the power while still holding the factory reset button

5. Continue to hold the button until it flashes blue (it will start white, then go to flashing blue after a few seconds) -- do not release the button until it is flashing blue

6. The lights will change again, maybe go dark, go solid blue, etc. you want to wait until it is flashing blue again..... in the meantime, you can repeat the power button and reset on the other devices while waiting.  You will return to the first device connected to your router first to see if the light is now flashing blue (in total this might be about 10 minutes).

7.  While waiting, they recommended to uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app to ensure that it is the latest version (alternatively check the version number on the app and on line to ensure that it is current which is what I did.)

8.  They recommended that I shut down my phone and restart my phone while waiting to clear memory and start fresh.

9.  When you see the flashing blue light at the router, return to the Google Home app, select the Plus sign, Set up Device, New Devices, (Choose a Home if you have more than one), and it should walk you through the setup..... the numbers that it shows should match the bottom of each device as you set up each access point.

As other respondents indicated if you use the same network name and passwords it will be seamless for your existing devices to reconnect.

Good luck!
