Bedtime routine with Spotify then Sleep sounds

Eric_L

I have been trying to use Routines to setup my personal favorite bedtime routine:

  • Play a particular Spotify playlist for 30 minutes
  • Then play Google's white noise ambient sound for the rest of the night

I just cannot seem to get this working. I tried adding the duration into the music description like Play Bedtime playlist for 30 minutes but it did not work (Spotify does not stop). To be fair, I tried it curing daytime with a 5 minutes option.

I tried just Play Bedtime playlist then add a delay step, then add a custom action of Stop playing music followed by the Sleep sounds White Noise . That option alerted me after the delay that 2 actions needed my attention because they could not start (because the music could not be stopped).

I have read lots of article people reporting issues with Routines, but I was hoping this was not rocket science here...

Any suggestion on how to achieve this? FWIW, I have a Samsung S22+ with the latest public Android 13 version.

Hi Eric_L,

That certainly isn't the experience we want you to have and thank you for the information ― let's check it out and isolate further. A few questions: what Nest devices do you use? Have you tried other music platforms as the media source? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Also, let's try to recreate the issue by playing a song for xx minutes, but this time around, it shouldn't be under routines but only with simple commands. For us to narrow things down, kindly try the commands below:

  • “Set a timer for 1 minute”
    “Set a <timer name> timer for 10 minutes”
  • “Set a sleep timer for 30 minutes”
“Set a sleep timer at 9:30”
  • "Play music | artist | genre | playlist for <duration>”
“Stop music | artist | genre | playlist in <duration>”
  • “Stop playing in <duration>”
  • "Play music | artist | genre | play list until <time>"
"Stop music | artist | genre | playlist at <time>"
  • “Stop playing at <time>”

It may be a lot but doing so will make sure of our success in finding the solution. We can do this.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Dan, thanks for the quick response. So, to be honest, while I own a nest mini, I am not using it for this purpose. I just use my S22. However, since I meant to get a wireless speaker, I may just get a new mini and try to use that for my routines. I will let you know how it goes.

Hi Dan,

So I am trying to run some of those tests, but I am not sure I get it... is each bullet a single set of commands? or each of the bullets a group of commands you want me to run?

Hey Eric_L,

The commands on the bullet are a sample of commands that you can use or include in your routine. You can choose 1 of them to check if you will get the same result.
