Bluetooth Speaker connects, but turn it off and it'll never play sound again!

If I set my Bose Soundlink mini as the default speaker and connect it up, it will play sound through the BT speaker fine. But turn the speaker off, and then back on again (nest hub says disconnected and connected on screen) and the sound will never play through the BT speaker again until you delete and pair again.

It used to do this before, then it started working, and now we're back to not working. Frustrating.

Anyone experience this?

Thanks.

Hey joonjonze,

Warmest welcome from the Community team.

It’s great knowing that our Google Nest devices are easily able to connect to other devices via bluetooth or even WiFi. I know this is not what you wanted to experience ― let’s check it out.

Few questions: what other devices are connected via bluetooth aside from your Bose Soundlink and your Nest Hub device? What kind of Nest Hub are you using? How far are they from each other?

For more information and troubleshooting, check out this link.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello there Dan_A,

Thanks for stepping up for this.

I don't connect anything else via Bluetooth to the Nest Hub although it's probably worth a test with some ear buds or something else possibly. I should add I have also tested an Anker Soundcore Speaker which had the exact same issue, so it seems to be at least "Speakers" that have the issue on my device.

It's a first gen Nest Hub:
FUCHSIA VERSION
8.20220713.2.219
SOFTWARE VERSION
49.57.36.477782712
CAST FIRMWARE VERSION 1.63.322641

The distance between hub and speaker is no more than a metre / 3 feet. It has worked in this configuration for a long time.

Open to any ideas.

Many Thanks

Hello again,

Apologies for the delayed response.

I wanted to confirm which of the 2 speakers is the default speaker. Is it like this: Wi-Fi router>Nest Hub 1st Gen(via Wi-Fi)>Bose Soundlink Mini(via BT). If possible, could you try the bluetooth connection on other devices like as you've mentioned, earbuds? Let's narrow things down for us to know exactly what steps to take.

Best,

Dan

Hello there, No worries.

That's correct. Wi-Fi router>Nest Hub 1st Gen(via Wi-Fi)>Bose Soundlink Mini(via BT).
My attempt at pairing some Anker Soundcore earbuds also failed although maybe for a different reason. The prompt appeared on hub screen briefly saying connected but then promptly disconnected. With any other speaker I can successfully pair and they will play sound until I turn off the speaker and connect again.

My normal process to pair an external device is to set as the default speaker via:

Device settings > Audio > Default Music speaker > Pair Bluetooth speaker

I can categorically say that I had the same issue with at least two speakers (Bose and Anker) I don't have any more to test with I'm afraid.

I recently factory reset the Hub and added it again on the home app to see if that resolved but no joy.

I'm at a loss

Many Thanks for your help

Hi joonjonze,

Apologies for the delayed response and thank you for doing all those steps. I wanted to confirm since I need you to try something else, do you have another Nest speaker or display? If you have, could you try to connect it via bluetooth on your other devices(Bose and Anker)?

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Dan

I'm sorry too, life takes over sometimes.

I can confirm Bose speaker pairs fine with nest mini and nest speaker however, this also does not want to connect again automatically once powered off. 🤔🫣

Am I being unreasonable to assume that it should pair back up whenever I power the speaker back on again? For a while it did and I finally had my kitchen speaker scenario wrapped up 😎😅 but alas were back here again.

I want to keep the hub as a kitchen aid but without the ability to use a speaker (I find the hub sound not so good) it ruins the whole concept really.

It basically means I will have to risk a hub max for (hopefully) better sound but then, will I, and should I? If the same problem is present how can I.

I would even accept it gracefully if you told me it was a known bug but it's the inconsistency that I find frustrating.

Thanks for your assistance

Sorry I should clarify..

For a long time I would pair by enabling Bluetooth on the speaker and then saying "connect Bluetooth". It would work each time.

Then for a while I didn't have to do this, I turned the speaker on and it would immediately make the plink plonk noise of being paired, sound from the hub would play on speaker, yay!

Now it only pairs by setting as default speaker from settings, and then if you power the speaker off, it will pair but no sound.

Thanks

Hi joonjonze,

Apologies for the delayed response! I wanted to confirm if the bluetooth behavior is still the same as before? It would also be a big help if we could clarify if your Bose speaker is also doing the same behavior? Are your devices connecting to your phone via bluetooth or between your Nest speaker and Bose device?

Let's test it out. Could you unpair all of your devices from each one and this time around, connect only either your Bose or Nest speaker to your phone directly and monitor for now.

Tell me how it goes.

Best,

Dan
