Can Duo be used on a Nest Hub Max without a phone number?

I just bought 2 Nest Hub Max devices (1 for home (family use) and another for in-laws).  Is there a way the Duo feature can work so they can call each other without my phone being associated with them?  Also for potential Duo calls to me not show up on either display?

The ultimate goal is for my kids to be able to video chat with their grandparents at their leisure.  Thanks for your help.

I have been searching for the answer to this as well!  We purchased two hub max devices just as you did, for my kids to contact their grandparents that do not have Apple devices.  I am still playing around with settings but it seems that my kids can’t make a call without me in the room.  I’ve set them up on Family Link, matched voices and faces.  But they do not have phone numbers (they are 11 and 10).
