Can't transfer music between otherwise trouble-free devices

Steve888
Community Member

Sony OLED TV (built-in Chromecast)

Chromecast dongle (Panasonic plasma)

Chromecast Audio (Yamaha amp/spkrs)

Ask Google Assistant to play (YouTube) music on the Nest or ANY of these devices, no problem. Ask it to "transfer" whatever is playing to a different device it either says it will but doesn't or it says that this (transfer) isn't supported by that other device WTF???

Hi Steve888,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

Move music, podcasts, radio and YouTube videos currently streaming from your Google Nest or Home speaker or display, or Chromecast device to another Nest speaker, speaker group, display, or Chromecast-connected device.

Supported devices

  • Google Home, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home Max, Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Hub or Google Nest Hub Max
  • Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast (2nd or 3rd gen), Chromecast Ultra, or Chromecast Audio
  • Speaker groups

Supported media

  • Any audio (except news and media playing via Bluetooth)
  • YouTube for videos

With the Google Assistant

Below are some ways to talk with your Google Assistant on your speaker or display when you move media from one device to another.

Note: This feature is currently only available in English.

To move media, you can follow these commands:

OK Google...

  • "Transfer to <device name>"
  • "Move the music to <device name>"
  • "Cast to <device name>"

From the Google Home app

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Tap Media . A controller for what’s currently playing should appear. If there are multiple things playing in the home, scroll to the controller you want.
  4. Select the device(s) you want to move your media to. If you have more than 3 devices in your home, tap More devices to display all of your devices.
  5. Uncheck the device(s) you want to move your media from.

Hope this info helped.

Best,

Princess

Thank you so much for forwarding to me this page which I've read 100 times now.

It.doesn't.work.

Various messages including "I can't do that yet" accompany the failure of Google Nest to perform as documented. Seems like an "undocumented negative feature" as we used to call it in my software engineering days 😞

If there's a diagnostic protocol I'd love to know what it is.

Hi Steve888,

Apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused you. Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

Fine, but advice was useless. Didn't even read what I wrote. Nothing to do with Google Speakers, the "transfer (music)" voice command simply does NOT work as documented to transfer music between devices which otherwise work perfectly. Complete waste time posting this query.
