Canadian Purchased Nest Hub Max on UAE Wifi

msalman
Community Member

Hi Smart Nesters,

I just purchased 2 Nest Hub Max from Canada (Ontario) and brought them with me to Dubai - United Arab Emirates. if anyone asks, I did this because it sold out in the UAE. When i try to connect to WIFI here in Dubai, it gives me an Error. The Google Home app is not accepting the WIFI password.  During installation, I noticed a message on the App indicating that the Nest Hub Max was purchased in a different country and the WIFI in the current country might not be compatible.

are there any ways around it?

thanks

Hi there,

This is a community forum supported by other users and community specialist's. Hopefully someone from the UAE can add more useful information. But as a general rule Google only officially support devices that have been purchased and used in a supported region.

You should try setting your router 2.4ghz WiFi channel to either 3, 7 or 11.

I tried both 2.4GHZ and 5 GHZ. but will try different channels. I know that they block video chats. so maybe that's the issue. Also, maybe VPN works?

Hi msalman, Nest Hub Max is not officially available in UAE, that's why it's not working. Devices are country-specific to meet connection specifications and regulations, so moving them about is not advisable. Unclear where the units that are sold out in UAE are coming from, but this is Google's official list of countries where the device is available (sold), works and is supported:

Australia, Canada, France, Japan, United Kingdom, United States (except Puerto Rico)

There is no way around it not working in an unsupported country, sorry.

Hi again,

For Google to class a device as being supported for a country you must be able to visit the online official Google store and be able to purchase the device and have it shipped to your home address within that country. Lots of third party resellers import devices and trick users into thinking that it's officially supported.

Hi Cathal_S,

Thanks for the response. They do sell it here in the big stores and it does work, Strangely, I had no issue connecting the google Chrome cast to the WIFI network here.  But the Nest Display doesn't seem to work. I purchased a new wifi router with VPN and will see if that works.

Hi msalman,

Thanks for responding.

Most home Wi-Fi networks are compatible with Nest products. But there’s a short list of network types that we don’t recommend using with Nest products.

Networks types that aren’t recommended

  • Mobile hotspots can have issues with bandwidth, availability, data limits and usage fees. Nest products work best with a reliable 24/7 internet connection, so you’d need to keep your mobile hotspot device at home all the time. If your Nest products don’t have a continuous internet connection, you won’t be able to view their status or receive certain notifications to your phone.
  • Public or open networks that anyone can connect to are a security risk. For security reasons, never connect your Nest product to a network you know nothing about, and don’t use someone else’s network without their permission.
  • Guest networks owned by another person can cause issues, even if you have permission from the owner. For instance, you might not be able to troubleshoot a Wi-Fi or internet issue because you can’t access the router settings.

Incompatible networks

  • Captive portal networks Nest products do not work with captive portal networks which are common in airports, hotels, internet cafes, and coffee shops. On these networks, you must sign in on a web page, and sometimes accept terms and conditions before you can connect.
  • Enterprise networks in businesses such as 802.1x/RADIUS networks are not compatible with Nest products.
  • 5GHz networks are incompatible with some products. Some Nest products, like the 2nd generation Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect, only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks.
Nest products that work with 2.4 or 5GHz Wi-Fi networks

Hope this info helps.
