Cannot enable captions/subtitles with voice on Google Nest speakers anymore.

This is a Google Assistant on Google Nest Device issue.

I have never had any major issues getting Google Assistant voice commands to work with most Google products.

However, since earlier this year, the command to turn the subtitles/captions on and off has completely stopped working everywhere.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/No-captions-YouTube-when-casted-to-Nest...

There is a post from April to June 2022 that also goes over this.

Now it's October and it still is a problem.

My Nest Hub, Mini, phone, etc will always confirm it will turn on the captions to any Android TV/Google TV/Chromecast media that's playing, however, it never works.

The sad part is YouTube and YouTube TV are the two apps I notice this in the most!

I'm a Google product expert and know my way around all Google devices, nuances, and usually know why things are broken if they're not working (unlike many). However I'm not happy with this situation.

I even opened my Android TV and my Google TV and used the Assistant on the remote to attempt it before writing this post... It actually tells me it CAN'T do it!

I've gotten two friends to test this independently of my WiFi network, Google account, etc exact same issue!

Hi Arthur_Gray,

Thanks for posting ― let’s see what’s going on.

This may be with Google Home/Nest devices and/or with your Chromecast or Chromecast with Google TV(with voice remote). To determine if the video has subtitles and/or closed captioning, follow these steps:

  1. On https://goo.gle/3aFSuU8, search for a video to watch with subtitles and/or closed captioning.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the section titled Additional Information (you can check if the selected video has subtitles in their preferred language).
  3. Start playback of the video and select the small CC button to view captioning options.
  4. If you’re using an Android-based device, go to the next steps:
  • On the Google Play Movies app, browse the video to watch.
  • Scroll down to READ MORE.
  • In the Additional Information section, the customer can check if the selected video has subtitles in their preferred language.

To turn on closed captions:

  1. From the Google TV home screen, in the top right, go to the user profile icon and select Settings.
  2. Select System Accessibility.
  3. Select Captions.
  4. Turn on Display to show captions. Then, choose your preferred options.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Dan
