Casting to speaker groups fails

Mlitt
Community Member

I have four Google mini's, Gen1 & 2, and one Google home speaker Gen1 (the taller, tapered model). I had three speaker groups set up, (Inside group, outside group and Home group) that worked fine. My backyard mini speaker was replaced after winter weather damaged it useless. Now none of the groups work by casting or verbally asking Google to "play on XX group."  I deleted the groups and recreated them but still not working. I have to start playing on one speaker then go onto the Home app, select Media and manually select the additional speakers I want to hear on. Casting works from one speaker to another one speaker but not to any group.

WTF Google?

Hey Mlitt,

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home devices when playing music on speaker groups. A few questions: how far are the devices from your router? What is the make and model of your router? Do you have network extender or repeater?

Try these steps below:

  1. Move your Google Home devices within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  2. Reboot your Google Home devices and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

I have the same issue but all speakers work individually, it's only the group which is not working.

Have often deleted and remade the group, restarted the speakers but it just randomly seems to work again after a few days.

Speaker groups seem to fail regularly with no reason why, just a message "Sorry something went wrong. When you're reasy give it another try". Very frustrating.

Honestly SO many issues with Google smart speakers, have opened several cases with no helpful responses.

Agree, WTF Google!!?

Hi Liezel_T,

We apologize for the inconvenience. Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Best,

Princess
