Chromecast built-in AV receiver not connecting to Home app

DCubed72
Community Member

I bought a Sony AV receiver with Chromecast built-in (model STR-DN1080) a few years ago and it has been working great for the most part.  But if my internet ever goes down I have to manually reconnect it to Google Home. Lately, Google Home will not recognize it, so I can't add it to my home or any speaker groups.  So now if I want to listen to music throughout the whole house I can't use my top of the line speaker system, only the **bleep**ty mini speakers.  I can cast directly to it from other cast enabled apps, like Spotify and Stitcher, it just didn't show up in the Home app, so I can't add it to speaker groups.  I've tried resetting it many times and that used to fix it, but now it doesn't help. How can I get my AV receiver back into Google Home app?

I have this exact problem. I have already reset te receiver and I'm able to cast audio from my browser for example. I'm just not able to use this from any Google assistant device or from the home app.

This is forcing me to use Spotify directly or use the google speakers instead of a several thousand euro setup. Considering this is not a cheap the device Sony should really start looking in to this.

I reconnected my phone to my network but it is still not showing in the Google Home app. This is a really annoying problem.

I'm running the latest firmware/software on my STR-DN1080 with Chromecast 1.36.x and there are no new updates waiting.

I was able to fix it, and it hasn't disconnected since.  At some point during my troubleshooting I had selected the receiver in the Home app which said it was disconnected and I pressed the "unlink this device" button to try and set it up from scratch. Then I found a list of unlinked devices and removed it from that list. It's been working fine ever since. I hope that helps

Where is this list of unlinked devices?  I just removed it, but I am unable to add it again.  I'm having the same issue after it's been working fine for about months.

I can't remember where I found that list, I just spent 30mins looking for it to no avail.  My receiver did randomly disconnect again yesterday, and I had to go through the whole setup again.  Try this; From the Home app click your profile icon in the top right --> Assistant Settings --> Devices.  I think this is where the list was, but I'm not seeing it now, maybe that's because I don't have any unlinked devices at the moment, I'm too afraid to unlink something just to test it.

So it disconnected and you were able to add it again?  I cannot for the life of me add my DN1080 to this Home. I've tried to add a Chromecast device, a display (obviously it isn't), and a Speaker - is there anything else I should try?

I should mention that I can find the list of devices you mentioned but it's not showing up there.  Yet spotify can see it no problem!  The problem is that I want it in a group with my other receiver so I can choose to have all groups playing at the same time.

I've been battling a similar problem with my STR-DN1080, and I've just found a solution that works for me. My STR had been working fine in a group of 3 speakers, then last week the STR would not put out any sound in a group, I could see via the monitor that the STR was connected, but no matter what I tried - no sound. I could get sound from it individually but not grouped.

I created a group that only contained the STR, then steamed to that "group". Music worked. Then I went back in to google home and edited that group and added my 2 other speakers. All is back working now.

I have the exact same problem with my Pioneer receiver, leading me to think that this is a Google, rather than AV manufacturer issue. Works perfectly when casting from Spotify, but doesn't show up in the Home app, and cannot cast audio from YouTube. It used to, but now it's consistently disconnected, despite all my devices being on the same network. I, too, would like to know where this list of unlinked devices is located. Unfortunately, "I found a list" doesn't really help. 😄

Sorry, I couldn't remember where I found that list.  See my reply to Chaloux above, it might be there.

Would you happen to know weter the first generation chromecast software 1.36.157768 is compatible with the latest Google Home/Nest?

Most users appear to be making complaint about receivers (not separate smart speakers and the like). I'm assuming most will be using the aan first generation software/firmware. According to the Google docs both should be supported even though I see no mention of Nest/Home in either description (second generation is 1.49.250946).

Perhaps people could chip in this thread stating weter they are running the first of second generation software.

Yes, a reply to this would be helpful.  If google phased out gen1 that would really suck - although it seems DCubed72 was able to connect his receiver again so that may not be the case.

I have a Sony Receiver with the same issues.  I think it is a google problem.

I have a Sony Receiver STR-ZA810ES using Chromecast built-in version:

System firmware version:  28480

Cast firmware version: 1.36.145853

This used to work just fine now takes forever to connect to OR won't connect AND will no longer turn on the receiver when called.  Used to be fantastic and now it's terrible.

I'm having the exact same problem, won't turn on my AVR, and doesn't show up in my Speaker Group anymore. I can use Spotify Connect with no problems, but I'd like to use the built-in Chromecast from the AVR and join it to the speaker group... Must be a Google issue...

I had the same problem. Suddenly my Sony Receiver wouldn't work in the group setup from the Home app. I followed some of the solutions on this forum but none seemed to solve my problem. Basically I could cast to the receiver alone and I could cast to my Chromecast audio units which are in a group and plugged into portable speakers. After some hours of pulling my hair out I finally found a way to get them all in the same group.  First I clicked on the receiver device, then clicked on the gearwheel and then the home heading and added the receiver to the home. (It is here where you can unlink the device). Then added the receiver to a room.  It seems that each device has to be assigned to a room otherwise it cannot be added to a group. I had to reassign my Chromecast audio units to rooms to be able to add them to the same group as the receiver. So I now have two groups 1 with Just the Chromecast Audio units and 1 with all three devices. I can cast to any one of them.  I hope this makes sense. Just aside, I think linking the receiver to Spotify direct gives a better sound, but that's just my opinion

This sounds like you already have the receiver added to google home.  I am unable to (re)add it to my google home.  Like you, I can cast to the receiver within Spotify no problem.  I am absolutely UNABLE to add it to my google home, despite it working quickly and easily when I purchased the receiver a few months ago.

"First I clicked on the receiver device, then clicked on the gearwheel and then the home heading and added the receiver to the home."

Where are you clicking on the receiver device - is this within the google home app on your phone?

Yes I am clicking on the receiver device within the Home app on my phone, this brings me to the volume screen and from there I selected the gear wheel. Can you see the receiver in the Home App?

Did anyone solve this? I have exactly the same problem.

Yes eventually I did.  Although I don't think it was necessary I deleted the 'Home' and created a new one, then switched ON all the Chromecast devices that I wanted to connected. The Chromecast Audio units automatically connected but the Sony receiver had to be added manually using the add device feature. I then created a new group. and added the devices.  I found that all the devices had to be assigned a room manually (it doesn't matter what room) to be added to the group successfully.

I believe that deleting the home is the only thing I haven't done. I guess that will be the last thing I try.

Don't delete! Just fixed it. Creat a new home. You new home will see the device. Add it to a room and it asks you which home. Use you current /old home and it works!

You sir (or madam), are amazing! I created a new home and was able to add the device again as per your instructions! I did have to forcefully close the app (android) before I could find the device via my new home. After that I was able to add it to the proper house and room. Thank you so much!

I do have a new problem though (appears unrelated). Music stops playing after exactly 10 seconds (using a connected spotify account). At least I'm able to request 10 seconds of music now 😅

Glad to help. It's been doing my head in for 2 weeks. Cheers and good luck with the Spotify issue....another very buggy app.... especially mixing with Google.

I tried this and unfortunately it doesn't work for me.  Still can't see the receiver when trying to add a new device.  This is pretty ridiculous.  If Home doesn't see the device at first, it'll ask what type of device you're trying to add.  I've tried all the options that I can and nothing comes up.

I bit the bullet and factory reset my 1080 and renamed it. When I created the new Google home it saw it. Then I added to room and used the option for my original home. I didn't need to add device...it was recognised in the new home. Hope that works for you.

I'll try this, although I believe I tried it a while ago.  Did you do a software update while you were at it or no?

I'm running the latest. And my 1080 is a USA version but I'm in the UK...on a transformer.

Thanks. I've just created a new Home and it can see the amp....after I factory reset the amp...🤦Not deleted the old one yet. Guess that's tonight's entertainment sorted!

This is where I am running into a problem - I can't see the receiver in the Home app.  I can see all my other Nests and Android TV no problem.  But since I removed the 1080 from the "unused devices" list, I am now totally unable to add it or see it.

One final update for everyone - I was able to add the receiver again!

Unfortunately, I don't really know what specifically fixed the problem.  Below is a list of everything I tried.  Ironically, it would appear I didn't do anything to actively add/see the receiver, it just showed up on the list of devices.  So it wasn't me choosing to Add Device or anything that made it appear.

- fully removed DN1080 from device list and "unused devices" in google home
- factory reset DN1080 (does not revert to original firmware btw)
- added a second "test" home (didn't seem to work)
- eventually deleted second "test" home
- I have an Asus AiMesh wireless setup, so I tried moving both my phone and receiver to different routers, the same router, etc.
- restarted phone
- switched both receiver and phone from 2.4ghz wifi to 5ghz
- renamed the DN1080
- tried to Add Device countless times, chromecast and speaker
- I have 3 Nest Minis, I renamed and moved them around to their rooms (kids like to swap sometimes so the names/rooms don't match)
- re-added "Office" room, where my DN1080 is and what it was assigned to originally.  This may have had something to do with it because it was shortly after this (and multiple other attempts) that it reappeared magically.  When I removed the DN1080 from my Home a few months ago, I removed the room it was assigned to as well.

Anyway - that's a list of things to try.  As I mentioned above, unfortunately all the methods here did NOT work for me, and again, the receiver just suddenly appeared as a device. Go figure.

I just noticed TODAY there is a sony firmware update for STR-ZA810ES... here's to hoping this fixes chromecast built-in issues with this receiver.

Everyone, please check today.  New Firmware out on 2/17/22...

https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/software/00268981

My receiver is NOT listed here but some of yours are.  That said, my firmware is updating... we shall see.  I think raising issues and making noise like this is the ONLY way to get these mfrs to take action. Thanks everyone.

Update for the STR-DN1080, just initiated and in the process now.  But like I replied earlier, I was able to re-add my receiver to google home (somehow).  Hopefully the update doesn't break that!

Just tested it.  It appears to be working.  Thanks everyone!  I can connect to the receiver now when the receiver is off/standby and it will turn on and start playing.  No more lag to connect or inability to connect.  Let's hope this stays that way.

So I understand. You updated with a firmware for different device and it works on your 1080?

Bonjour a tous,

Good Day

Have you tried removing the device from the home app and then adding it back again?

This sometimes gets things working again particularly after an update.

Bonjour,

j'ai supprimer l'ampli de la maison dans l'application home, mais je sais pas comment le supprimer tout court. Il apparait du coup en bas de l'application comme cast a affilier.
